View Full Version : Photoshop .IFF export
DarkBane 11-21-2002, 09:36 AM I know there is a plugin for Photoshop that will allow me to save as... .iff, but I can't seem to find it.
I'm using Photoshop 7.0 at the moment.
Does anybody happen to know where I could get that plugin.

nope, no problems here. I just converted a 8000 + res texture with the IFF plugin.

Yup, same problem here. When I try to save out a 2048*2048 psd file to iff it crashes everytime. Whether the image is flattened or not. Quite irritating really. You would think AW would invest the time to get it taken up as a serious file format. At the moment its a bit of an afterthought with the plugin etc.
Btw if anyone can offer a solution to the problem (always says A program error has occured) to large maps then please post.

It comes with PS7 now. You don't have to use the a/w one anymore. It is on the PS7 cd in the goodies folder. Make sure you install 7.01 though, it fixes the weird alpha handling they added to PS7.

hey!!
probably a stupid question , but what are the advantages of exporting as an iff.?
i normally just use the normal file formats ( tiff. tga . jpeg. etc)
hope somebody can shed some light on this for me.
cheers!!
well, because iff is maya's native format, so it's the one it understands best.
and in an iff, you can have the Z buffer, and some vector info i think...
i do use tga or tiff sometimes, never jpg.
what do you mean with "normal file format" ? :p

I´ve had problems with the Alias Plug-in also.
Does the Adobe supplied plug-in work any better?
Maya is supposed to work faster with IFF files.

I've had mucho trouble with Alias Pshop plugin. It crashes with large images also. The main thing is it so sloooooooooooow to save. You hit the save button and it takes 10-20 times longer to save to iff than any other format. I gave up trying to save a 2k image it was taking so long.
If you save the exact same file in any other format.........it's almost instantaneous!
I'm happy to see I'm not the only one having trouble......
Is the plugin with PS 7.0 actually a new plugin? Or are they just including the same old AW one?
If it's an extra and it actually works better than the current one maybe someone could upload it...
That is if it will work with PS 6.0 or whatever.
Cheers

Well my instructor reckoned that whenever Maya renders it converts any non-iff file textures to .iff anyway for the render which is why you always have loads of .iff files dotted around your images folder etc. So he said to me its better to use iff in the first place just to avoid the time it takes maya to convert the files during the render. Whether this is accurate though I dont know but it sounded plausible enough to me!
As it turns out I think .iff is actually a pretty good image format in terms of the information it can hold, just a shame that its not as flexible when it comes to other programs.

No, it's stable, much better than the first one. One of the Adobe programmers was out on highend about 1.5 years ago asking people what file formats they want Pshop to include by default.

Actually maya converts all textures into BOT files, not iff. You can convert any file format to BOT by using the makebot.mel command in maya.
