View Full Version : LAN connection status problem - netshell.dll ?

Hi,
The last two days I've been having some alerts about bad-blocks on my boot-disk so I decided to run an Error-check hoping that problems would be fixed, as there were no major problems from the disk other than the event-viewer error messages.
When I returned to Windows I noticed that although my main computer had internet access, it wasn't supplying an IP address to the other pc that is on the LAN.
After a while I also noticed that even the ipconfig dos utility wasn't working, giving me an error about not being able to find the file "netshell.dll". So I went and reinstalled this dll (by gettting a copy from the system32/dllcache folder). The utility now works as normal, but I still have problems like the fact that I can't see the "Status" of the LAN connection, I click on the option or even double click on the LAN icon but it does nothing. And most of all the other pc still doesn't get an IP address.
I'm afraid that the Windows Error-checking tool might have eliminated some dlls or other crusial files that deal with networking since this was the boot-disk.

Has anyone come across anything similar to this behaviour? I've been trying to find if the ipconfig or the network monitoring tools are part of something that I can reinstall, but no luck so far. Any help, info or ideas on this will be very much appreciated, I really hate it that my other pc can't have internet access. And I only pray that I wont have to do any fresh windows reinstalling.

PS. I haven't used any program that strips-down windows like nLite, nor have I installed anything new or really performed anything out of the "ordinary" these last two days.
Plus I know with certainty that it also is not affected with any spyware/trojans/virii.
Thus I assume all this trouble comes from something modified by the checkdisc as the disc itself had many bad blocks.

the disk checker does not corrupt files. I imagine those bad blocks were former system files/data that have gone bad. If your hard drive is giving you bad blocks, you might be in for some trouble. I would try to re-install windows or get a new hard drive to ensure nothing else goes wrong.

Singularity2006 you're right on this and I just came to realize why :(

After doing a Windows Repair I managed to recover those lost files and bring the system under its previous normal behaviour, but I'm afraid this can only be temporary as I just noticed a major overheating problem with the same hard-disk (65-70C and up!!)
So I decided to re-arrange the hard drives within the tower, added two extra fans for a better air-flow, and managed to drop the temperature to a steady 50C, but I am sure that this is very high as well.
The disk is a Maxtor SATA 250GB drive split into 4 partitions, three of which I'm afraid are heavily used as they have things stored that I literally use all the time.

So apart from the heavy use of the disk do you think there must be an additional hardware error that causes this overheat? I'm getting a new replacement disk tommorow, do you think I should refrain from buying such a large disk and partitioning it in a similar fashion?
