Title: Design Your Jaguar
Name: Realtimeuk Ltd.
Country: United Kingdom
Software: 3ds max, Photoshop, VRay
These are some of the latest images created by RealtimeUK for Jaguar US. The cars are part of an online configurator that allows the customer to view over 4,500 permutations of the Jaguar car range, from model to body colour and alloy wheel style.
We produced front and rear 3/4 images of the X-Type, S-Type, and XJ, in all model derivatives, all colours and all wheel types.
The cars were created in 3dsmax7 and rendered in VRay.

Hi guys,
Thanks for all of the positive feedback:thumbsup:
A bit more info....
The images weren't solely created by myself, but i did work on them.
I work as a digital artist for RealtimeUK (http://www.realtimeuk.com) who are a CG company based in the north-west of england.
The cars were rendered at 1600x1200 with a frame time of approx 1hr 45mins, based in a studio lighting setup with global illumination and standard lights.
Cheers, Phil
I'm speechless. Your renderings are fantastic. They deserve 5 stars! One question: did you use reflection planes to create those reflections or is it post pro?
cool, but it seems that pictures are oversharpened...

Great images :applause: , could you post the wires?, the shaders looks like airbrush work, could you post the settings of the materials?
5 stars for me.

D*mn those are some nice renders, I bet you are having a very happy customer. I love them the look and feel are those of a brand new sparkling car.
I can almost smell the new carsmell coming of that picture.

I've changed the images for un-sharpened ones. I went a bit overboard with sharpen:)
Also added 1600x1200 renders instead of the 1280x1024, and added the s-type.
Cheers, Phil.

The renders are almost straight out of 3dsmax. There is a little brightness contrast etc. but all of the reflections and highlights are from light planes and reflection boxs.

Hi guys,
more info...
The cars were modelled with nurbs and poly's, although nurbs were mainly only used on the body shell where needed as they tended to be a bit slow in max. Tyres and the majority of wheels are poly's
No HDRI was used, only a few gradients and reflection planes
Here are some wires.

thats an incredible work, i realy like the model, materials and reflection on car
it is possible, to make for US a screenshot of your max window, with 4 views, that shows the lighting setup and the positon of boxes?
thanks

The poly cars were modelled from scratch in max and the Nurbs surfaces were imported from Rhino, as max nurbs aren't that great;)
great models! beautiful renders!

Excellent level of detail & accuracy! I think the rendering could use some work. The paint reflections look very sterile /flat / artificial. I’m not saying my paint is much better, but I don’t see much falloff in reflections, diffuse, or anything else. Play with various falloff (light, fresnel, normal, etc) maps in various slots (reflection, diffuse, specular). Maybe a little bit of reflection blurring could help. I suppose it could just be the environment, studio environments tend to make cars look artificial like this. I won’t pretend to be an expert on this subject, however I recommend a more challenging environment, perhaps a showroom?
The NURBS modeling seems very clean and crisp, but if you can reduce the complexity (control points in Rhino) or number of surfaces, that should improve the quality of the model and make adjustments easier. I say this as a designer, since I’m constantly adjusting/redesigning large portions of my car and have developed techniques to do it quickly. I have seen some professional (a.k.a. factory 3D models) that have similar NURBS layouts, so you’re not really doing it wrong.
Overall 4-stars from me! Just one question, which part of this project did you work on?

Shoey I would like to say for the 2nd time that the renderings are awesome and I am enjoying looking at them.
I have just one TINY TINY crit. You know on the 3rd hig res image (red one).

The lower grill/air intake mesh is letting the car down just a bit.
Good stuff:thumbsup:

Hi Guys,
Thanks for all the great comments, all of us here appreciate them:thumbsup:
PhantomDesign: We had a some difficulty finding a lighting solution that Jaguar felt showed off the contours of the cars to the full potential. There are actually falloffs in reflections etc. but the way the scene was setup to reflect may not show it. We weren't allowed to have any reflections in the cars, hense the reason there is no HDRI used, we had to setup gradient reflections instead. I agree with you though that the cars can sometimes look artificial in studio lighting, but if our cars look as artificial as real cars in a studio shot, then we must have succeeded in making them look like real cars in a studio:D.
As for the NURBS modelling, i've never used them so i wouldn't know how clean you can get them, i only dealt with the cars in 3dsmax, but thanks for the advice.
Which leads me on to your question:), i can't take any credit personally for any of the modelling, my main job on this project was scene setup and rendering, then comping the many different render passes together to make the required elements for the online configurator. I also had some involement in lighting and materials.
nitin: Thanks once again, I have to agree with you about the lower grille on the S-Type, but as the final resolution used was 800x600 you can't really tell at that size. We rendered them at 1600x1200 to combat some anti-aliasing problems. We'll probably have to take a look at it though if we continue to use the 1600x1200 size.
By the way i love your bike:thumbsup:
Cheers, Phil

Hi Phil,
You could always do black paint on every render - it's the cheap way out & everyone loves it! Very simple shader setup, hides flaws (not that can see any), and gets lots of cheers on CGTalk. Ha ha, just teasing!
I've never really had a LOT of time to study rendering itself - but I do a lot of reflection studies (as a designer). I realize you weren’t allowed to have it reflect anything, but lets just pretend you were given some artistic freedom - or working on the next project. A great way to show off surfaces using reflections is any use of grids (such as the patterned windows on the side of a building). For interior environments, skylight windows running parallel or perpendicular (not both) can look really cool and show off the surfaces very well. Check out this McLaren Warehouse (http://www.tvrfreak.com/Albums/Trips/2002%2006%2007%20London/05%20McLaren/page_01.htm) (or my WIP (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=293894)). You may also be interested in checking out the placement and layout of lights at car shows to get cool effects – don’t actually use 1000 lights, but 15x (or more) white in the self-ilum slot should do the trick.
Anyways, if you have time, just play with falloffs, change the colors, try out various mappings - you can get some very interesting results - even in bland environments!
That’s about all I can suggest – keep up the great work!
