View Full Version : 3D Studio Max 7 Physical and Virtual memory use

I've recently got back into 3D modelling with the aim to start Architectural interiors and exteriors.
I recently bought more RAM for my PC in the hope that this would speed up my render time's but I've noticed tha max insists on using virtual ram, when I clearly have enough ram to cover the whole render and some more. ( I opened task manager aswell to see if it was just max displaying incorrect numbers)
my question: Is there a way to increase max's use of Physical RAM?
any help would be much appreciated
As far as I know there isn't a way of making Max use more ram (I don't know about mental ray?).
It is coded to optimise the resources of your system as best it can. Unless your scenes become more complex I don't think you can force an increase in the amount of ram Max uses.
But on the plus side, you can do a little more multitasking with your extra ram.

Thanks for the reply JBW, I've come to realise this since I posted earlier.
True I can multitask allot more, I've gone so far as opening as many applications as I could possibly need in a working day, and I still have some ram for opening files! .

How much ram do you have? I know having 2gigs myself I tend to run out of ram here and there and really have to look at the scene of where the issues are thats eating more ram then nessiary sometimes.

yeesh...my orc project is composed of over 200k polys(so far)...with about 26 seperate textures of a minimum of 1024x1024...several are 4096x4096...the scene is being rendered in MR and includes particle effects (a total of about 3k particles emitted per frame...each with a lifespan of 25-35 frames) and fur (current hair count is 15k on one item)....i'm using just about ALL my system memory...now i've tweaked the OS to use as little resources as possible...and frankly...i can't see why you're complaining :P i have roughly 98% of my total system resources being used up for 10-15min at a time when rendering this scene....all i can say is be happy you can do something with the computer while max is rendering :)

I have 1.5 gig of Ram, my scene is quite small I've watched "Task Mangaer" as I start up Max with my scene, once this is loaded I still have 800 odd meg to play with.
And when I star Rendering, there is still lots of RAM to be used up but max never takes this up.
But as you say I can do one or two things at least while max is rendering, That is with my current scene, It could all come to a grinding halt.
