View Full Version : Self Portrait once a week

This was my self portrait thread, now I'm turning it into a general art and progress thread in which I'll post various things, including self portraits.

Inspired by Android and other artists, I'm starting a new thing here. I'm doing at least one self portrait painting a week until my classes end, and from then one self portrait a day for a year, or for as long as my schedule permits.

Here's the first of my efforts:

Medium: Photoshop CS
Time taken: 4.5 hours.

I'm overall pleased with this, but I know I have a long way to go. Coming back to post this I'm seeing so many mistakes I want to go back and correct, but I'll correct them for the next portrait.

Much of my time was spent learning how to paint in photoshop, and learning how to choose the right colors, both of which I still need a lot of work on.

This first one is digital, but my next few will probably be traditional dry mediums (graphite, charcoal, and pastel) since I need a lot of practice with them.

I'm posting this now on a couple places to help keep up the learning momentum.

Good first post, you obviously grasp the way shadow falls across the topology of an object (in this case your face) as well as mixing various colors to produce a convincing flesh tone.

In your future portraits, try studying each component of the face (eyes, ears, nose, etc...) as a seperate entity once you've massed in the general shape of the head. Get in close and examine how the the delicate folds of the ear are curled within it's shell. Look how light and shadow play across the nostrils, lips, folds and crevices of the eye. Also note that depending on your light source, the darkest part of the shadow will be around where light and shadow meet, with faint back lighting occuring in the shadow area.

This one isn't as accurate as the first, looking at the mirrored image it's pretty bad. However, I like the lighting more than the one before. I think the switch from color painting has helped me focus more on understanding lighting across complex forms.

I'm going to try and simplify the next one even more, focus on shape an form, not accuracy to better understand the head.

Isn't it at Conceptart.org (?) that some quite famous guy also does a selfportrait almost every day ? I don't know who he is - ha ha ! But I have the impression that he's quite wellknown ....

Anyway, this won't do you any harm - on the contrary - if you have the time for it, I'm sure that it will make you advance a lot.

It's getting better and better ! for this one, I'd say that the right eye is a bit too small and some slight adjustment of the forehead could perhaps also be needed, but a great difference from the first ones :thumbsup: This one looks much more sculpted.

Now it would be interesting to get more and more colors introduced.

This is more a quick sketch done in painter to familiarize myself with the program and to keep myself in practice. Finals are coming and I have a ton of assignments I need to finish.
