Using max 4.2

Normally, I like figuring out things myself, but this one has me stumped.

I initially figured I could just do it with a RingWave and some textures, but I was wrong.

So, I've worked for the past four days with various particle techniques alone and in combination with the RingWave object with no success. I tried turning to the web, but couldn't find anything there either :(

If anyone's willing to help me out, or point me to a tutorial, I'd greatly appreciate it.

There's a really good tutorial on this somewhere on the web... can't remember where. I'll see if I can track it down.

You could have oodles of fun with the Ringwave Extended Primitive.

didnt they blow the death star up with pyroeffects on mini modle?

if so wouldnt the best bet be to use stock footage of explosions such as from artbeats?

Yes, in the original, they blew up a mini model. But the rereleased versions (around '97-'98) were completely digital.

BrandonD, yes, I'm sure the RingWave primitive is the ticket, but as I said before, I'm not having any luck.

Thanks for the replies.

Actually they never really blew up a physical model. If you look carefully the model disappears and is replaced by the explosion. The addition of a CG shockwave in the rerelease is the only digital enhancement I think.

Anywho, the RingWave primitive is simple, but if you do some clever mapping with noise, gradients and opacity, you can get decent results.

Once I made one by deforming a Torus with an XForm modifier and using soft-select passed to a Noise Modifier.

there's an briliant tutorial in Computer Art's Special - Special effects, 27-12-01. It's a long time... and the tutorial it's about exploding a planet, but they used Cinema4D to model the planet and After Effects to create the explosion !!! the result, is real good stuff !!
