[this first post will always be updated to contain the latest version]

I'm building a lighthouse in Maya, and so far I've done the roof and part of the lantern room and surrounding porch.

And yes, I will be aiming for a photorealistic look... But for now, most of the model still isn't textured.

Please be brutally honest, except for one or two of you who should compliment me and send me offerings so I don't lose hope too early.

Here it is with varying degrees of extra grittines applied.
On the right is the original from the last render.

Which one do you like best? :curious:

It might be a bit easier to judge if you see the same part of the model in all 4 renders...
here ya go!

try crossing the 1 one from the left with the third one
(i numbered your variants 1 2 3 4)
also try not only spots but also veins...

hmmm... veins? You mean make it kind of marbley?
To tell you the truth... I'm afraid of going overboard with the aging proccess here... All the reference material I saw (almost 200 pics) had spotless roofs... I guess they use non-rusting paint.

Anyway, Here's a small update showing my progress with the geometry. No textures on anything except for the red roof and vent on top.

Let me know what you think.

I just used the default Maya light setup... One directional light coming aimed down and to the left... I didn't have time to muck around with yet it... Especially since I don't have a clear idea of the final image yet.

Here it is with a blue background (it does looks better) and textures added to the window (transperancy, specularity, color and bump files).

hmm... you gotta put some dirt on the glass... and perhaps the thing that holds the glass need some dirt or just make it look older

I want to keep the windows fairly clean... Remember that each Lighthouse has a Lighthouse keeper whose job is not just to operate the lighthouse but also to keep it in top shape.

If you look up close (in the attached render) you can see that little droplets of rain have dried out on the window... But I do need to improve those a bit... Add some grain and noise to them. (both in the color map and in the bump map)
As for the window frames, they aren't textured yet... I am trying to focus on the modeling... I only do textures when I am tempted and succumb to my dark side ;)

And before you mention it, I know the big granite cylinder the lantern room is sitting on is awful... It's just a placeholder so it won't float in the air... helps me visualize the windows and the rest of the room's final look.

Thanks for all the helpful comments serpent, I appreciate you taking time to help!

:) actually i even wasnt thinking to say something bout the granite thig cuz i knew its just a place holder... now even with a keeper glass still can get dirty during the day (bird shit for example) besides the lighthouse is not a brand new one, just built, its a building with a long service record, and even a good keeper wont be able to take care of it so much that the glass would be lookin so new and clean ohh and dont forget most keepers are drunkards:beer:

Well, I did think of the "bird-shit factor" and decided that if I go that way, It'll never end... :)

Still, all the pics I saw were even cleaner than my glass... they had cleaner roofs as well.
And like I said, I'm still not sure how my final composition will be like... I will decide how much dirtier I want to make it when I decide the mood of my image.
And besides... Unless birds shit diagonally or projectile-like, it can't really reach the windows... Now, the roof is a different matter altogether... :hmm:

P.S. I updated the first post in this thread... from now on I will always update it to contain the current condition of the lighthouse... You can see what I added so far there.

Updated the first post with new pics showing the new rails and the beggining of the tower itself...
Would love to hear some opinions on it.

Added more geometry to my model. Check out the pic attached to the first post.

I added the tower itself and the tower windows. I still need to add the lantern room details, and many many textures... I am looking for ideas on how to improve it.

What do you think of the lower window frames? In the reference photos I have they are like that too... "windowless windows". Do you think they looks good? Should I add real windows in there?

I think the tower itself looks a bit too CG... Any ideas on how to improve it?

Im thinking a little discoloration or slight craking happening in the white shaft area will give it more character than the glass or roof which I see you have done, but the white shaft is the most noticable part considering it covers the majority, so try dirt, or some sort of color discoloration

OK, I gave up on this one for now... Too busy with other "real work" projects, and have too many ideas for other 3d projects which are crying out for my attention.

So here is what I did so far, and how it will probably remain...
It's missing the insides of the lantern room, the door to enter the lighthouse, and a more detailed island... But WYSIWYG.

Goodbye lighthouse :wavey:
