Concepts. I want a big vista view, so I'm looking down from orbit. I want to use the elements of a large orbital station to draw the eye to the action.
I'm leaning towards the cylinders.

Another idea. This one is a landscape vista, a city, alien landscape.
I think I'll stick with the first idea. I feel like doing a space painting.

I blocked out the major shapes and elements in 3D. For compositions like this one I like the fact that I can desing the major components adn light them, then move the camera around to find a good angle. I've done two. I like the second better.

the second one. I dunno, maybe the other. Thoughts?

Here's a quick sketch/line/value comp.
The story will be an attack on the stations.

I've begun to lay the colors in. Put in the starfield in the bG. Now on to the planet surface.

added the city lights. I drew them on a flat plane, them made a TARGA and mapped that to a sphere in MAX, rendered it from a matching camera view, and took it back into PS6 to drop onto the planet. It still needs alot more work, but now I've got the proper perspective to work from.
Next will be the terrrain and clouds over the lights.

worked some more on the planet, clouds and cities. The terrian detail is next, then the stations and attacking ships.

moving along. No comments?

Huh. I don't understand the lighting. In the nearest station there is no shadow on the rings. Maybe the station tube make shadow on that. The secound station is too dark.

Tha space field can be more deatil.

The planet is ok.

Have a good work!

The major light source is the left. The areas of light that seem out of place will be from explosions on the stations, yet to be put in. That's also why the others are so dark. They will be in contrast to larger explosions. The 3rd and far station will be broken up completely.
Thanks for the reply.

The deadline looms... working towards the final. I'm still on the stations.

Time is short! Now for the fun part. Blowin' stuff up. I ketched in a few explosions to get a feel for the finish.
Gotta paint.

Well, the final JPEG image.
Here's the story. The earth has paved over, so to speak, and the richest, most elite of the population has risen above it all to live in orbit in three huge stations called the Pillars.
Visible from space, the structures shine in the night sky like stars to be wished upon, or a target to aim at.
An attack has been mounted on the Pillars by a small party of merciaries.
But will this overt act of war be a blessing or a curse?
