& so i'm TRYING to learn how to model, trying. And everytime I instance and mirror something over, there is always this edge that never ****s off. I don't know what i'm doing wrong but it sure does suck. How can I avoid this, or what am I doing wrong.

Are you talking about the edge down the middle of the model for say, a body, when you are modelling one side and instancing the other?

If so, don't worry about it. When you are happy with how your model looks, weld the two halves together and your problem is solved.

Are you using max 5? If you are, you can forget what I just said and use the symmetry modifier.

Welding them is a problem because I dunno how. I mean, I found the little button to press and I was mighty excited when i found what you were talking about, but it's grayed out. Whatever is a girl to do?

you'll need to attach the two halfs so they are one object and then select all the verts (of both halves) that run right down the middle, and THEN hit the ol weld button. as a side note, you can tell if the two halves were properly welded by watching the # of selected vertices (it should be cut in half if all the verts welded nicely)

Weld generally works on the vertex level. To achieve this you must do the following.

1) Delete your mirrored instance.
2) Remirror the model using copy (instance does not weld)
3) Select either model half and click the attach button (Under edit geometry), then click the other half.
4) Select all the points in the middle of the mesh(ie. The vertices you wish to weld).
5) Click weld.
6) If you get a "No vertices within weld threshhold" dialog then you either need to move one half closer to the other, or you can up the threshold level. If you have mirrored correctly, this shouldn't happen.

Give it a go and let me know how things went.

Whatever is a girl to do?
When I see one I'll ask her.:D
