Hello everyone, I need some advice on setting ap an FX shot. I am new to this but learning.

We are going to do a test shot that could very well determine wether or not we set up an FX dept in our company. I really want to do that so I must do an awesome job.

Here's the gist of it. There is some sort of battle happening (re-enactments) off in the distance fighting is seen, up close there are some riflemen standing and shooting. As one of the men shoots the scene slows to a stop, the bullets are frozen in mid air. A Historian walks in amongst the battle picks the bullet out of mid air and examines it talking about the type of ammunition used. He puts it back and walks off the battle resumes.

I have an idea of how we would shoot it but not sure.

Lock down camera. (we are on location)
Shoot a clean plate with the action in BG only. Move in a portable green screen shoot riflemen doing their thing. Mark the spots where they were standing. Bring in the historian, shoot his piece.

Add CG elements in Composite prog.

Not sure about things like having a real bullet already there and mounted on a rod or should the guy just hold it in his hand already?

Or is this even the right approach?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
