View Full Version : Rain puddles?
Jon_Pran 11-21-2002, 01:11 AM This should be really simple, but I can't seem to get it to look right. I basically want the ground to look like it just rained, with randomly shaped pubbles (that reflect the sky). Any suggestions for tutorials or tips (or even books) would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Generally the easiest way is to make your depressions in the ground, then add a plane just under the surface of the lip of each depression with your water texture applied to it.
Did that make sense, or do you need more details?

if you wanted to keep it all in the material, i suppose you could use a raytrace material with mask map in the reflection slot, using a falloff map (set to fresnel) as the map and a splat map as the mask. replace the lighter blue color in the splat map with a dark grey (to maintain some reflectivity over the whole surface) and the darker blue with a white color, which should make shiny puddles... this should get you started...and you could in turn use the same splat map in the bump channel, with teh colors reversed, and perhaps blurred a bit to add some depth
while this is a quick and dirty method, the more realistic way would be to do like erilaz says and just physically model teh puddles
