View Full Version : Whats in the box, NEED CRITIQUE
alex_rial 11-22-2005, 10:52 AM This is a animation assignment where you suppose to portray what is in the box without seeing it. Tell me what you guys think about it. I want some good feed back before I start to clean it up, so be straight forward and blunt with your comments, I can handle goos criticism.

Hey Alex,
I think you need to look at the standing up bit again, it's got no interest and is a bit unnatural.
What are you planning on making him do as he's looking at the un-opened box? At the moment you've got the pause but no thought process going on. Maybe he should look around to see if anyone is watching him open it?
His reaction is also pretty weak.. I'm not really sure what he's supposed to be feeling. If it's surprise then it should be a lot more dramatic, shock also. It maybe looks like he's dissappoited with it after the initial reaction, but it's just not that clear.
Also his finger sticking out doesn't read very well, it looks like he's pointing past the box which is a bit confusing...
I'm not sure why you've framed it like you have.. He doesn't move his feet at all so you quite easily cut off the bottom half of the screen and just get the area above the table which would improve the composition.
Good luck with this,
stu

This is the first pass of this animation test. He is disapointed with what is in the box. He expected a fat ring but got costume jewelry basically. I have to add in some details to complete it. Just trying to get feed back on what I have.
Thanks for the comments, I appreciate them and I am gonna take them into consideration as I complete the piece. I am adding it again here but this time it is a different angle, closer with no feet in the frame. Oh yeah I was gonna add a old style burglar mask to him, (ie the kind that only covers your eyes - Incredibles style)

Thanks and I hope more people decide to comment on this, I need all the crit I can get.
bye

alright...in your next pass it's time to add some anticipation...
*before he grabs the box have his hand swing back a bit, so the viewers can see that he's about to do something with his hand
*before he throws the box onto the table, swing his arm the opposite direction a bit to show that he has some momentum in his throw.
Without anticipation, the animation looks very linear...
Ok...this is bothering me....add some moving holds. Especially when he smiles, and after he picks up th box...after he picks up the box he freezes and looks dead (Moving holds are when you scoot the parts of the body over a sinch to keep the character alive, although the movement is not part of the action).
After he flips the box open...same thing...moving hold needed...
lastly, after he tosses the box, add a moving hold.
Pretty good basic blocking overall, though...most poses seem natural...
adios

looks a lot better! I agree with the post that suggested you put more anticipation before he grabs the box...

The first thing I notice is the evenness. It seems that everything happens at the same speed and right on queue with a beat. Before you go through and refine any of the actions, you really need rework the timing. Make some actions faster and make some slower. That applies to your holds, as well - make some shorter, and make some longer. Also, it has already been mentioned, but go ahead and add moving holds (it will make a huge difference). No major joints should ever stop completely unless you are trying to take them out of the animation - it makes them appear to "die". Overall pretty good work, though. Keep it up.

Just one question for you guys, What do you think, should I put in some moving holds, hehe (Only joking). I guess that is something I missed and I am gonna get right on top of that. I will repost when I get it looking better.
Thanks evefryone , you guys are the best
