View Full Version : nurbs patch head texturing
mikeS 11-20-2002, 08:19 PM hi .i have recently modeled a head using the nurbs patches approach.I am nearly done with him. but now i am wondering how to texture the head.I mean i ve got a lot of patches.
Does anybody know how to texture a multi patch head?

You can convert the patches to polygons, export to your favorite 3d texture paiting program, paint and later apply the resulting textures to the original NURBS geometry.
Something we do if we still use NURBS patches for creatures at all is to project a solid texture, the use 'convert solid texture' to get one bitmap file per patch, the assemble these files into as less big images as possible in a way that belonging bitmaps are adjacent to each other to create a larger image. This is done by a script. Then the artist opens this image in e.g. Photoshop and paints the textures. The onther script uses saved postion data to extract the previously assembled images back into single per-patch files.
But I'd rather suggest to convert the whole stuff into a single Catmull-Clark subdivision surface (which won't change the shape in the least way if you used only non-rational NURBS with uniform knot vectors -- that is: b-spline patches).

hi thanks for the suggestions? But how can i convert a multi patch head consiting of , i think 200 patches, into a single polygon surface?

you can convert nurbs to polygen, use this command.after i have done, combin the polygen, and use merge vertices,or merge multiple edges.

if you want to use multi patch, the other way is use dp3d,first,create a shader, assign it to all the patch,in the maya menu deep paint3d>material splitter, select the shader which you assign to the patch, and press assign shading switch botton, this is the way no need to convert nurbs to polygen.:D
