This is my first time posting in the 2D forum, so go easy on me! This is a portrait of my girlfriend that i'm doing as both an experiment in portraiture and to get to grips with Painter IX. Now before you jump down my throat, i did trace the outlines first. Easy as pie i know, but i really wanted an exact likeness and the project is about myself getting to know the brushes, blenders etc, not an excercise in drawing. Some may see that as a negative thing but hey, it's my project! :) Any C&C is more than welcome though!

And a 100% shot of the eye:

Update

The hair is just to give a better feel, it's not being used in any way for the finished version. A few things to clean up, mainly the nose area and under the left eye. Oh yeah, and the eyebrows! hehe.

Thanks :D. If the quality of it seems a little sporadic, it's because i get bored/frustrated on parts easily so I move onto another area so I don't get sick of it.

A little update for now. Only changed the front part of the hair (got tired of skin tones for a bit :p hehe). Looking at it now, there's a hell of a lot of edges that need tidying up. Here is a 100% close up of it as well. And I've added the pic i'm working from to aid in the crits where i can improve.

Oh yeah, that pic was taken on Boxing Day just before we turned out to a fancy dress party. Just so you lot don't think I have a school girl fetish :argh:. I'm not going to be adding the freckles either.

189 views and only 1 crit? Oh well, maybe another update might tempt you :D. Mainly focussed around the nose and eyes. Also made the lines and blending a lot tighter. A lot of places i felt looked too soft.

It's coming along pretty decently and I don't think it's a big deal to trace especially when it's for the purpose of learning how to do something.

It looks like it is coming along nicely but I can definantly tell that you're pretty much tracing shape and color from the original picture. I think that's the main thing that bothers me is that I can TELL. Maybe subdue some of the hotspots and reflections (in her eyes for example) from the flash. The tones are coming along nicely and I can get a pretty decent sense of depth from her facial topography. The hair has too much of an illustrative look to it at this point compared to teh rest of the portrait though in my opinion. It looks as if you're trying to manipulate the light with the shadows and highlights but it's almost as if you're scared to push them and I think that's maybe a problem. Remember that you're doing this in a computer and mistakes can easily be knocked out so feel free to push something when you want. Especially contrasts with light, color and saturation.

I hope that helps.
