View Full Version : How many polys would you call "high-poly" ?
knellotron 11-20-2005, 05:28 PM I've been working on a realistic Pharoah ant for the past week or so, and this is by far the most detailed model I've ever done. It's ~3700 quads before subdivision, and ~234,000 after subdivision. It's the first time I've ever considered any of my models to be high-poly, yet I'm certain that 3700 must be small potatoes for some of the posters here.
So how many polys does it take for you to consider a model to be "high-poly?"
(I do film work, not games, so polygon effeciency isn't really a big issue. I'm just curious.)

High poly in a game situtaion for the PS1 Consoles would be about 2-300 for one object. But then you could have quite a few objects. In film there are no real constraints, as they all use super computer speed render farms. In film, important character models, and objects like ships, or gollum that have to hold up to very close shots are in the high millions, 60 is not uncommon. Its all relative to what context the object is being used in

60 million!!! WOW
But say for a movie along the level of detail of FF: Advent Children. How many polys would be in each scene? (I'm talking background, character, everything together)

My idea is that as long as something is working properly, efficiently and is renderable in the given time, it's ok.
I don't think there's really some sort of watershed number.
It's an interesting question, but I think the answer changes from project to project.

30,000 = high
20,000 = up there
under 15,000 = okay
6,000 = nice
greatly depends on your pipe. if you're setup is slow at 3,000, then you'd need to
scale down for efficiency.

hello:
yes it depends on the device u working on, thats why every body giving a defirent number but.....
the everage of how many polygons for a high poly in an average device like 1GB ram and 128 ddr3 VGA it start from 9000 poly at least

And it depends on how close your camera is to the subject being rendered.

1 billion poly for a cg paper - high
1 face for the same cg paper - low:)
