Hi, I agree with SamSed for the chamfering, but it would help to see more of the model. If you want, put online a pic where we can see the prob and the area around it.

Hi guys, I have a piece that I want to be smoothed, but it has some square indentations in it that cause problems when trying to smooth. Any suggestions on how to deal with this?

Looks like you have points that aren't touching each other. So you end up with two edges when there should be just one.
