Hello friends !!!
I discovered this thread and decided to draw something.I tried it with the Aeon Flux actress.Im sorry but i needed 35 mins since im very slow in drawing and since i made the eyes and the hair at the end...
I see now that the head has a wrong angle than on the photo..

20 minutes and i painted this...i feel like I didnt come far..maybe i dont understand the exersize yet or im just too slow
First the painting itself, then the drawing on top:

This time i could hold the 15 minutes limit :)
hmm im still looking too much on the real outlike than on thinking of the shapes it is made of like cylinders and simple opposing curves...that takes time and therefore i am slow...if i would simplify the outline i could have more time for a bit shading etc...
btw dont ask my why my drawing is a bit bigger lol

D-Hawk

The point is doing a lot of these and finding yourself improving by doing so :)
Your first took 35min, your 3rd only 15min and that one isn't easy

keep going you're doing great
btw, if you haven't already, why not create your own sketchbook thread? That way people can follow up on your progress and you could put some longer studies there as well
You won't believe how much progress you'll make, driven by other cgtalkers' comments (works for meh!)

have fun

heartbeat

D-Hawk,maybe try to draw some for a minute or two each one. This will help you to pick up the essence of it.In drawing gestures do not think what the model looks like but what is he or she doing.
Here are some links:
Glenn Vilppu (http://mag.awn.com/index.php?ltype=Columns&column=vilppu&offset=20)

Hope it helps a little

Ok D-Hawk and I had a bit of a simultanuous drawing session earlier.
We took heartbeat's advise and did a few 2min sketches, followed by 5min sketches
unfortunately we didn't get to the 15min ones yet...
On his request I'm putting our drawings side by side, mine left, his right (allthough the point isn't competition)

2min:

http://users.telenet.be/nr43/images/cgtalk/figure/Untitled-1_resize.jpghttp://users.telenet.be/nr43/images/cgtalk/figure/shaolin2_resize.jpg

And here's one i did in between those 2 when D-Hawk was on the phone:
about 4-5min

here's one I did just now to get warmed up. tried to think before drawing the next line (you decide if it helped lol)

http://users.telenet.be/nr43/images/cgtalk/figure/sketchatlon17_resize.jpg

Devised_Poly I like the hand study it's very nice. would love to see oyu develop that torso a bit further and see what you come up with

werepumpkin keep ging :D

Medhi, why not add both images, the first being the 15min sketch and the 2nd the final version? Would be interesting to compare the two :)

craban nice work. you could try playing a bit with levels and brightness contrast settings with your scans to come closer to the real thing
mind the proportionson the arms and legs. you tend to draw one leg longer than the other in these ballerina studies.

Nice work everyone.
Oh and as our dear Rebecca mentioned, it's always a good idea to have a look at the Anatomy Lesson Series: Body Part 2 - The Torso (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=405198) , no matter how skilled you are

Hey NR43. I checked out your sketchbook and you are coming along very nicely. Always good to see dedicated people. I could tell immediately that you payed more attentino to your lines. The lines definately make it more interesting.
Been looking at a lot of Kollwitz and Lebrun, so I redid in a similar style. Gave more thought towards the marks as well, so took a bit longer ~30min

NR43, TY for comment. I particularly like your 2nd peice Great pose and gesture. The line in the 2nd drawing by the figures right shoulder seems a little wierd to me. Would be intresting to see some more work posted on this thread. Any one else find it easier to draw on a darker background.. Seems to be easier for capturing light.. Any one else feel same.. or.. not...

Devised_Poly

Kollwitz (http://www.mystudios.com/women/klmno/kollwitz.html)

Couldnt find a good Lebrun site. Just google Rico Lebrun. Could also google Kathe Kollwitz for more pictures of her work.

NR43

thanks for the link Devised_Poly,
interesting artists. Shows that art comes from within the body and mind and is a reflection of how the artist interprets what they observe in their very own way...

Redwolf I think the pro's around here will usually say it's best to start with a midtone or dark background, since it's hard to correctly estimate values on a bright background...
I'm not really the right person to answer this though, since I have a bad habbit of not creating enough contrast. Something I must work on...

Schneesturm,

Welcome! :) To learn how to post images, take a look at this thread:

You can use photobucket as an image host, but to avoid their anti nudity clause, just cover the parts of the image that are nude, such as here (http://features.cgsociety.org/stories/2006_01/rebecca_kimmel/pic_3.jpg).

New to CGTalk? Learn how to post IMAGES here!

I allready read that "How to post images" thread. Still it failed. I don't know why. And there is still that thumbnail. Maybe I learn soon. :hmm:

I just tried Imageshack, I used another website before. I've noticed that photobucket doesn't allow nude pictures. That's why I choose Imageshack.

If you paste the URL of your image into the yellow square mountain / sun icon in your EDIT POST text editor, then you should have no problem. ;)

Nothing special, just continuing to do some 30 minute cross contour drawings - these are pretty basic / beginning level drawings, yet it's so refreshing to do them - I think it's actually helping me a lot - 30 min each:

Heya Mu. :)

Am sitting in on this drawing class to sort of observe the teacher - and it's about a sophomore level drawing class which has been really great in terms of reinforcing the basics.

Essentially this is a cross contour drawing. The goal of it is to essentially recreate the topology of the face as best you can. As the teacher describes the process, you are to look more at the model (yourself or otherwise) than the paper - and really sort of pretend as though you are an ant on the surface and describing the terrain. He has us doing 5 self portraits a week, which is why you may see a few of these around - believe me, I'm not vain. :D But it's a great exercise to try and really not very hard once you get the hang of it. The main thing to look out for is when form is above the eye level and when the form is below. You want to try to recreate the perspective of these lines - sort of like this, but in organic terms:

http://www.artyfactory.com/perspective_drawing/images/perspective/cylinder_2a.gif

Maybe I'll write up a tutorial, I think this is a highly useful exercise. I have more examples of drawings I've done, but they aren't really great, just useful as practice. :)

Aviva
02-12-2007, 11:20 AM
Hi Rebecca - I’m also fascinated by your contour drawings. The contour lines provide a great sense of volume and accentuate the features – all the lumps and crevices of the body. I would love to see how you go about drawing them, if you have time for a tutorial. You seem to do heaps around here, so kudos to you for keeping this place so well maintained. :) What course are you taking? Your understanding of the human figure and its muscle structure is astounding.

Gord – great faces, I love the bold brush strokes you use.

It's been a bit of a hand night tonight, I started off with this, then drew my left hand four times.

Mu
02-12-2007, 02:04 PM
Rebecca - thanks for takin the time to explain, I will surely give this a try!

believe me, I'm not vain. :D

believe me, for all I care you could be running around in silk pyjamas and readymade makeup for breakfast and inquire on a daily basis with your magic mirror if you're still the cutest around (:D ) as long as you fill this place with these lovely drawings of yours.

Aviva - hi there, I am not sure if I have seen other drawings by you already. Here's a suggestion: darken down your canvas from the beginning so the lighter values stand out more. The overall contrast of your sketch is very low and the value range above 50% (guesswork), so the light values have too much to compete against.

Looking forward to your future stuff...

Aviva
02-13-2007, 06:29 AM
Hi Mu, thanks for the suggestion! I'll up the contrast next time. :) The only other things I've posted so far are on the previous page and in the sketchbook thread I started yesterday. Not much there yet, I'm just getting back into drawing.

Here's my latest attempt, went way over time, but its the first time that I have tried to concentrate on just drawing a human in a long while. There are a lot of errors, like the elbow lacks definition and is floating instead of resting on the knee, and the foot looks demented ,but I felt that 40 minutes was long enough for a 15 minute sketch :p

My first real attempt at doing a digital drawing. Couldn't get the images to line-up in PSCS, and decided to dump a color layer part way through. That's all I'm gonna say. Next attempt will be much better.

Good first attempt Asatira. I think I immediatly deleted at least my first ten attempts at drawing digitally, takes a while to get use to but I'm sure you'll improve with each go.

Did these a while ago before I started in my new job and things got busy. Think they took between 20-30 minutes.

Could I add also to try and keep the images to 800x800 pixels please! The images far excede my monitors size.

To do this, if you have Photoshop CS or a newer version, go to Bridge, clear once on the files you saved the images under, go to tools at the top of the window, photoshop, then click on Image processing. Now set the width and hieght to 800 respectively. It will not stretch your images, but will just shrink them to fit within the borders.

If you get stuck with the above instructions, please ask where you get stuck.

Hi
liking these last few very much.
Being a Painter fan myself, i'm glad to see some other Painter users around :)

Is this the square carcoal brushes you used here?
Try using them on a paper textured canvas.. should be good for some awesome effects :D

Great work in this thread!

TheCrazyDudeSRD
06-25-2007, 10:19 PM
Actually they are the Artist's oils (a couple modified)... But I'll have to check those out... By the way, how do you modify the canvas texture as your saying... I've got P9.5 if that makes a difference...

NR43
06-26-2007, 06:56 AM
By the way, how do you modify the canvas texture

by using papers

In the top menu select "windows" -> "libraries" -> show papers
or you can directly choose a different paper from the toolbox (it's one of the small square images at the bottom of the toolbox dialog)

I'm at work now so I can't check for the exact terminology but you'll find it ;)

Well, I've started to try my hand at this 15 minute exercise, and I must say I am pleased with the results. The time contrasints force your mind away from "How should I draw this part?" and instead you focus on "How much more can I do in 5 minutes!" I liked the change quite a bit. So all in all I'm pleased with the results. Here are my pics all drawn on pencil and paper and scanned in.

Hey guys,

Here are today's poses. Each done in 15 minutes. Some thoughts: I think I'm beginning to see where my drawings need work actually. I think, at least, that I tend to draw my torso a bit too long. So it tends to throw off the proportions of the rest of my bodies in general. I dunno, what do you guys think? Again all comments and critiques are welcomed and encouraged! :)

Hi guys! I thought I'd join the party :) I'm sort of 'late' I see.. :P I started at page 1 and went up to page 34... :P and well that's where I ended :P :P So I've got a lot of other sketchathon pix to look forward to :) *yay*

Anyways, I need to catch up so I made smaller sketches on A3 sketching paper. But because I really suck at gestures I decided to make these sketchathon sketches as gesture practice.. so I only spent max 5 minutes per gesture (hope that's ok... :P)

I definitely think I'm getting better. These next four were all drawn using different techniques and stuff. The first one is awful, the second one took so long because I didn't like how it turned out so I went over it again. The last one is something I'm a little proud of, even.

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z222/Yama_016/afhgaaw.jpg

The head was a real struggle on both of them. I used up my 15 minutes in both. wish I hadn't wasted so much time on the background. :)

Hello there. I've just started getting into drawing seriously now so I feel this place is the best place to start. Hopefully I'll keep working on the other drawings (No, I will) and I will improve. But here is me starting.

Hi folks.
Lets see one of my Tries. 15 min on Photoshop.
Some Painter following perhaps.

I was just reading along for the past 3 Years and i got my Intous A4 since 3 months.

I saw this thread and was extremely overwhelmed with drawing up to now.

More is coming up.

@ Seabean: I like your line structure. Very gentle drawing but still very good shapes.
More attention should be payed to the gravity and how the body is balancing.
The arm position is not 100% right.
Also the paper space could be used better, but that´s a minor Problem.
But very nice for 15 min and furthermore for your first :)
Kind regards.

heh, been a long time since i last posted here :P
Anyways, I wanted to get a bit more confortable with Manga Studio, so i thought this might be good practice.

(the ref. photos i used, were from the 16th page of the reference thread)

those took me about 15 minutes to draw. and about 5 minutes to put the raster fills, except for the last one, that one took 10 min. to put the raster fills (or how do you call that. pattern?)

Hi there,

I think they're called "screens", but I don't really know.

Those drawings look very nice, minimal and condensed to the bare necessities.

oh yeah the reason I've kind of drawn all female is because I'm modeling a female in Zbrush right now so i want to make sure I can actually draw the female form.

still on the early pictures here. I'll try to do one of these every day. I did this one and I'm thinking if it's worth placing it next to the photo. Now I'm just focusing satisfying the pixel parameters rather than the drawing itself. I guess with or without a photo you guys will be able to see if I did a good gesture or sketch right? So with that said, here's the side by side pic, but from now on I'll just post the sketch. I tried to keep my lines clean this time. Thanks for the suggestions.

@ Lapis: that's some cool stuff.

@ Terrextre: lol how come it took you so long to upload it?

@ ceax: I think the legs are too short in both sketches, but maybe someone with more experience than me could point something out.

Here's my go at it (gimp and tablet):
