ARTOONATOR,

Welcome aboard! :) No worries about having posted here (the Forum is admittedly confusing) :) but this is a better thread to which to post life studies:

Life Drawings - Post Your Life Drawings! From Class or Workshops (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=257531)
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=257531

Traditional work is absolutely welcome on this forum, on any of the threads! :)

~~

The thread you are currently in now is the 15 Minute Sketchathon thread, where we we focus on doing 15 minute sketches using the following thread for Reference:

I5 Minute Sketchathon - Thread 1: Reference (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=298699)
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=298699

~~

Feel free to post your life drawings in the Life Drawings thread, and then come back to participate here in the 15 Minute Sketchathon! :)

Cheers,

redehlert,

Nice stuff! Like the grainy filter too. :) Try to really cut in with those darks, and really elevate with those whites!

JoseHerb,

but i'm afraid, rebecca!!
hahahahaa....seriously, it's more of the time issue for me to really dive into the darkest darks and lightest lights, but as i get more proficient, i'll be sure to hit these with a quick one-two jab.
cheers!
d

ps. as for the grainy filter - here's what i do within photoshop.
1. create new layer.
2. with 'white' color chosen as the foreground color, take the paint bucket tool and white out the canvas.
3. with that layer still selected, go to FILTER>NOISE go for a number that looks good (I used 13 here); distrubition: uniform; monochromatic.
4. set layer style to multiply.

that's all there really is to my little tricky.

Hmm, I don't know. I suggest using the imagehost, www.photobucket.com.

This thread (at the top of the Anatomy Forum) explains how to use it and to post images:

New to CGTalk? Learn how to post IMAGES here! (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=267088)

nice updates everyone!

hey rebecca, i find that you do enjoy the torso in your studies but then relax on the hands and feet a bit. do you do this because of the 15 minute time frame, so as to establish form, motion, light and dark or is there some other reason i haven't mentioned? just curiosity. :)

This is the all powerful Powdered Toast Man from the amazing Ren & Stimpy cartoon. Back in the day, I could do Stimpy's, Ren's, Powdered Toast Man's and Mr. Horse's voice. PTM has been a favorite of mine. He flies backwards and lifts off with a mighty blast of 'air' from his bottom. HAHAHAHA....

Thanks Shyam :) On some of your sketches it looks like you have a textured effect, like you were working on coarse paper...did you draw it and scan it, or is this an effect in a drawing/painting program?

Two more...I hope it's okay to do some of the older reference photos, though I guess you guys are sick of seeing them. All photoshop.

One of my biggest fears about graduating this time around has been that I'd lose touch with the art community...this whole place is such a great way to get critiques, bounce ideas off other artists, learn new stuff...And those links to old master works you & others have posted on other threads in this forum have been super helpful too.

Glad you think so! I know what you mean about not losing touch...I wish I had known about CGTalk earlier. ;) Make yourself at home! Rebecca,

I'm actually using photoshop, drawing with a 7-px hard round brush, and smudging with a 60-px spatter brush...I'm quite new to digital painting/drawing, just got a tablet for Xmas and am still learning to use it  I'll try using some smaller brushes though, thanks for the advice :) - Al

Hi Allison,

I had to say 'Wow!' out loud. That Tai Chi uniform in your first pic, ... I think it is, is captured like a silver shiny syrup. Astonishing material if it was to exist. Its a great effect and a pretty special effort if you just got the tablet at Christmas.

Carry on. Great work.

Nice work, Al! :) I would say re: brushes to just continue to experiment ~ I personally like the airbrush, but there are just tons of brushes and settings to play with ~ this can often be the problem. :) Lots of artists stick with default setting brushes, but others are pretty handy with creating custom brushes, etc. There are lots of tutorials out there on this site ~ run a search and you will likely have more tuts on hand than you can shake a stick at. ;)

Rebeccak,
Thank you for the reply,
so I am posting again :)

Al_Morrow,
My sketches are not digital I feel more comfortable
with pencils for now .You have nice feel of motion in your sketches,
May be you shoud try using less lines as I should do:).But this is
just an advice.

I am reading Rebeccak's explanations and individual critiques on people gestures and trying to imply this on the sketches in this thread .
So these for now:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/Mishkata/15_04.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/Mishkata/15_03.jpg

For the second I used a large sheet of paper so I scanned it in two parts.

sturm,

It's likely because your CGTalk Interface / display settings are different ~ no prob! :)

Just go to the top of the CGTalk interace, User CP > Edit Options > scroll down to Miscellaneous Options > change the dropdown to Enhanced Interface - Full WYSIWYG Editing.

WYSIWYG = What You See Is What You Get. It means that what you type is what you will see on the screen (you won't see the image tags etc. / code) ~ which is what most people prefer.

SAVE your changes.

Return to the page you were browsing.

You should then be able to see the icon in the text editor. If not, let me know. :)

Cheers,

sturmkim,

I think you just need to set up all of your Interface options. No worries, I had the same problems when I was new to the site. ;)

Go to User CP > Edit Options > scroll down til you see Thread Display Options:

If you have Show Images unchecked, then when you post, you will only see links (and you will only see links for others' work, as well. Do you currently only see links for everyones' posts? Let me know.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b380/rebeccak5/Mod/Thread-Display-Options.jpg

By the way, I can now see your post as an image. But if you have Show Images unchecked, YOU will only see a link. If you check Show Images, you should be fine. :)

Cheers,

Yar.... I have returned from the depths of Davy Jones locker to renew my quest to become a better artist and to participate in this thread. The holiday season was really busy and I've just started up again at a new school which has occupied a lot of my time. I plan to get back into daily multi-stage sketches. I think I was starting to make some decent progress when I was interrupted. Anyway, enough talk. I'll kick some stuff out soon.

Sorry to hear that ~ glad it got resolved! :)

heartbeat,

Great to see you back! :) When I first started doing drawings for this thread, I found that it helped to work on a sketch in incremental 15 minute sessions ~ just to get the hang of the format. So long as you're honest about how long it took to do a piece, I think it's fine to post work like that ~ the goal here is to become comfortable with whatever medium with which you're working, not just to adhere to a strict format. :) So if you wanted to take these pieces a bit further, in subsequent 15 minute sessions, it may help you to become more comfortable with digital. Only a suggestion. :)

Having said that, I don't agree that your sketches are a mess ~ I think you have a great start!

Cheers! :)

I have the feeling that I don't realy understand how should we aproach the assignement for this thread. What should be our focus in those short 15 minutes? You might already answered to the question but the thread is huge now and I can't look all over it, so please give us some directions to follow. BTW your peanut hint realy helps me.

Good question, absolutely. :)

One thread I think you might quite like (and it's shorter) ;) is the following:

Beginners' Lounge (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=297229)
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=297229

There are some really good exercises about / explanations about GESTURE here (all linked in the first few posts of that thread) which might really help to explain the goal of the 15 Minute Sketchathon ~ which is, in short, to capture the Gesture, or essence, of the pose.

Lots of good work happening there ~ I hope you'll join in!

Hi, these forums are a jungle, I wander how you keep track of all these :)

I knew about the 2, 5, 15 sketches, that's the reason my first post was in this format, then it came to me that this thread may have other "rules" and I asked that question.
Thanks for reply, now I know what to follow.
