Thanks, shyam! :) Hehe, after that last awful set, I needed to redeem myself a little bit ;) ~ in truth, I hate to leave a trail of unfinished pieces ~ I've kind of prided myself on weeding out all of my unsuccessful drawings over the years, which kind of psychologicall builds you up ~ so posting my bad drawings is unfun for me, but it's good for me to get into the habit of just posting regularly, good or bad. ;) So thanks for the encouragement!

Weef, it's 1:30 am and I think that's the last I'll be working on this piece, at least for now. It's kind of cool, though, to revisit pieces I've copied traditionally in a digital medium ~ definitely good practice!

What I like most about your digital work is that you seem to be able to translate pretty well the general feeling of a traditional drawing, which I find to be a rare ability. Any tips, shyam? :)

Cheers, :)

Gord - i really fell for your style, man. It is like a detailed form of fuzziness or like I said earlier an abstraction of deeper insight.

rebecca - your charcoal drawings never cease to unhinge my jaws.
With your digital pieces I sometimes get the desire to put on my glasses (which I can't cause I have no glasses), though.
I think you somewhere said that Goro wanted to make you use hard edged brushes. From what your digital landscapes are looking like (they have the same dreamlike quality) this simply seems to be your style, but in one of your earlier sketches in this thread there was a stronger balance between soft and hard edges, somehow.
*background music stops playing*
*silence*
*tumbleweed rolls by*
err, yea, but what do I know, actually?:scream:

zhuzhu - like in Gord's work (different style though) what fascinates me is actually the same thing I like about certain music: "depouillement,
meaning stripping down, sobriety, concision, or bareness[...]"

a term used for Eric Satie mostly - when you leave out all that is unnecessary and thereby expand into the heart of things.

Or to put it in a nutshell (putting on forumite mask):

you guys roooooock!:buttrock:

Lemog

"depouillement,
With this word... you put your finger of my most hard problem... each time I saw the zhuzhu's drawing... I'm always impress by his "fast" good feeling... few lines, and it is already very speaking

He's a composer with a great sense of humour(which I guess you should love, too).

I remember this piece which is 40 seconds musical ideas and development and then 2 or 3 minutes just end phrases and cadences, building up a completely absurd and hilarious climax. I laughed so hard when I first heard it.

Hi guys, yesterday I discovered this hidden goldmine by accident, then immediately started to go page by page to gather the references (silly me missed the references thread and spent more than an hour doing this); anyways, I wanted to say that this is one helluva interactive drawing class.

Queensoul God bless you brains for popping out this great idea and thanks for making it so great and addictive.

I also want to thank Rebecca for putting up so much of herself on helping out everybody and making an enormous effort to make this community rock . I've been following your stuff since your first post and must say that none of your six thousands was in vain. And thanks for the image submitting tut, it helped ;)

So I'm a little late, I know, but I'll try to keep up and start with some of the old references. Above is my first sketch done for Sketchathon.

Thanks, Mr. Mu! :) I think those last ones were pretty bad, though! :scream: With respect to my digital work, hehe, yeah, I do have a soft spot for the soft brushes ~ HA! *crowd groans* ~ no, but actually, I do prefer a slightly fuzzy look, but need to develop it so that it looks intentional, vs. like I need to have my prescription checked! :scream: As I have far more experience / training in traditional media painting / drawing~wise than digital, I'm here to learn / practice as much as anyone else (if not more!) so all comments / crits are well~received. :)

Hey, I really like your piece! Great style, and I particularly like the way that you have reddened the outer extremities / hands, that's quite sophisticated! :) Want to tell us a bit about your background and training? :)

RoboMonkeyModule : Youre one of the cool kids around here  So keep posting! You will be better. I just love to see youre different stages of the sketches. It is really helpful. Maybe we should all post step by step tutorial of our own technique? Or maybe its too laborious.

Thomasphoenix: I see no point in complaining that its hard to draw 2 characters in 15 minutes. Those sketches are fricking awesome! :scream:

Booyaka: good facial work! Really different style. Looks bit like a caricature?

heythatreallyhurts: Great sketches! I sortta forgot that shading doesnt need to be complex to work. Ill try that kind of style soon :)

LaurentiuBontea: If you sketch like you paint you have no problem!

Queensoul: Dont pretend. I really like how shiny and almost metal like that skin is. Very cool

Here is two sketches by me! I think it is pretty good idea to attach the minutes spend on the picture so there will be no need to ask for it later on.

12.0.9 15 Minute Sketchathon References
NEW REFERENCE PICTURES POSTED IN THE REFERENCE THREAD Yesterday

As far as references from our worthy artists here, for this thread, it'd be great to keep things to a modicum of order. If not there'll be chaos. Rebecca, Myself and Martin Erilaz can post references in the reference thread. If you have found a pose, or a pose set (and am sure many of you do) that you'll like us to post, please pm any of us with the links. You will of course be credited for that.

I love this thread and figured this was the best way to submit work on CGtalk and have an excuse for it being sketchie.

Thanks Queensoul. You know, had I looked at your signature I would have had such an easier time finding the reference thread! It's right there in front of my face. I think this sort of thing is fun, and I've had a lot of practice because some of the CGtalk members on my IM play a game with me where they find a picture and give me 10 minutes to draw it. 15 minutes is so much better, methinks! And I shall voice my opinion about that asap.

Anyhow, I like mike have been going thru looking at the various references you guys have. I love all the dynamic poses!

*hehe* :D there is no way that would be possible on my current system, it takes up massive computing power to record the screen while painting, and I can only pull it off because its a low resolution and quickly painted image.
but it might be fun to do highlights of the painting process, just quickly illustrating the different stages of a painting, kinda like a moving step by step, I would love to see that from other users.

I would love for you or anyone who wishes to do so, from the OFDWs or otherwise, to do step~by~step tutorials.

Falcor_ : the expression on the last face sketch came out just the right way, in my opinion. Great work, efficient hardheadedness on your side to do that more than once!

This reminds me of a question - rebecca or anyone of those great talents out there:

Is it actually possible/advisable to approach the face or human head in the same gestural way we practised this in this thread and on others in this subforum with complete bodily gestures?

I mean, how do you gesture-sketch a face? I guess you can use the opposing curves lesson alright once you established guide lines, but the first step... any thoughts on this anyone?

thanks for reading - hope you don't consider this spam:)

Yeah.. watching at my first sketch, I thought that it's a bit of a waste of time for me to make a b/w from a colour... and it's a pretty good excercise to try to capture the colours is a quick manner.

NEW (NUDE) REFERENCE IMAGES HAVE BEEN POSTED HERE: (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showpost.php?p=2903618&postcount=47)

http://forums.cgsociety.org/showpost.php?p=2903618&postcount=47

The same Reference Images are being used on the current OFDW 009 (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=301355), which just opened today.

The idea is to do a 15 Minute Sketch here using the Reference Images, and then, if you like, to continue to refine a finished piece in the OFDW 009, which use the same Reference Images as linked above.

Participation in the OFDW 009 is purely voluntary, of course! :)

When I ran "dépouillement" through BabelFish I got "dépouillement". (it must have got 'lost' in translation ...)

Lemog: Good good more color techniques

Mr. Mu: Keep it up man! Depression or feeling of failure is not accepted  Try to understand what makes a picture work. Break apart all forms and lighting directions before hand. It helps a lot.

To understand color just turn up saturation madly to see why colors are that way.

I felt really sluggish with these sketches. Had no time to color them.

I wasn't going to post this because I went way over the 15 minutes (took me 50), but I think the 3rd frame into the gif was about 15 minutes, and I wasn't satisfied with where it was at that point, and I kind of wanted to finish it. SO it's a speedpaint, but not a 15 minute one. I really had trouble with Jackie's features for whatever reason, and my gesture drawing wasn't looking so great... anyhow, here it is.

and, Gord, while I'm at it: next time you need a reminder what depouillement is either listen to Eric Satie, Arvo Pärt, or just watch that sketch of yours with the rugby player: leaving out all that is unneccesary and expand into the heart of things. What a sketch!

Shyam, I wanted to say earlier when going thru these posts, I'm extremely impressed with your technique and style. Keep rockin that pencil. Rebekka (am I spelling that right, I can't remember), your knowledge of anatomy is grade A choice beef, chicklette, I just love looking at your posts. Anyhow, I'm trying to recruit as many people as I can to come here, I think it's such an awesome way to not feel pressure and learn a few tricks. None of my charcoal drawings are gestural drawings (well I have some but those are from a few years ago, and I don't think they can even be considered gestural :S), so for now I'll just look at the thread

About the little size of the picture on my Anatomy Thread, it's corriged... only an errors with bad link... now it's better I think.

In other hand, It's already planed with the portrait... I know, it's certainly less interesting than an complete female model

Hi, this is my first post in the anatomy and figurative art section. This is my 15 minute sketch for OFDW009 (give or take a few minutes) :).

Im starting to think that I should probably do my sketches in pencil first. I feel comfortable using the wacom for painting but dont seem to have as much control when it comes to line drawings. I'll finish this one off the way I started but I'll start sharpening my pencils for the next ofdw.

BTW Rebecca, thank you for your invitation again. I'm looking forward to getting my rusty butt in shape  - J

Im really glad u liked them.

Lemog mon ami ,c'est vrai.:).The hands could have been better(I usually draw hands first),In this case the hands got drawn last so i culdnt finish it well. The poses were difficult because they were simple,Action is always easier to draw than relaxation.

okay, now i'm starting to understand my shortcomings. dating back to grade school and college testing - i don't do well under time limit pressures. i freeze up! :banghead:
at any rate, i gave myself 5 minutes more as a warm up.

Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone. :) I'm very glad to finally have time to dedicate to learning to draw...
Some more sketches, with ancient references, hope it's okay.

http://www.freakachu.org/hitomi/images/15min2.jpg
The infamous pointy lady. 15 minutes, didn't get to color since I spent so much time trying (and failing) to fix up her arms and hands. :\

http://www.freakachu.org/hitomi/images/15min3.jpg
Loved the lighting on the reference, so went to color without an undersketch... Bad idea. Ended up spending 10 minutes (!) on her clothing, so I had to go about 3 minutes over the limit to get her to look half-way decent. 18-ish minutes total. I hate how everything except the clothing looks.

http://www.freakachu.org/hitomi/images/15min4.jpg
This is why I should stick to easy stuff, enough said. 15 minutes.
