audit: Good job! I know you will get faster just try some more :wavey:

Damn... this sitting woman with a laptop was super hard to draw! It was the most complicated piece so far for me.. The fact that the ground is tilted really confused me so much...
Also most of the joints are hidden somewhere! ... And they beauty of the subject is confusing so much more:argh:

I had to try 4 times to really understand why i was so confused.. Here are them tries.. 15 min each... but second one 16min

Please please some of you guys try to draw this pose.. I dont know is it just me, but it was really complex.

Well, I decided I'd try some new stuff today. It's been a long time since I've really sat down and done an extended study, so I gave that a shot in place of my 15 minute drawing. It took me about 1 and a half hours so I'll post it on the OFDW 8 thread. Here is one at 2 min and another at 7. I like the faster one a lot better.

RMM,

I think it is crucial when learning to draw (and that goes for all stages of one's artistic development, I'll be learning how to draw for the rest of my life) to draw fast, 2 minute studies. I think these are really important for building perception and sheer reflexive response while drawing. Also, the key bit about short poses is that they are fun! Once you get a bit addicted to them and have done enough of them (a few hundred should do it) ;) then you will begin to realize that you can start to put what you have learned while doing the short / fast, poses into the longer ones. You'll really start to infuse energy and life into your longer poses in the long run!

Cheers, :)

scorpion007,

I am really liking your sketch style a lot, particularly on the fast / energetic poses! I think the more static / sitting poses are harder, because there's not much motion to capture. It might make more sense to do value studies for these / vs. taking a linear approach ~ but that's just my opinion. :)

Great to have you on the thread! :)

Cheers,

~Rebeccak

Thank you for the compliment, Rebeccak. For the static poses, do you suggest I focus less on the line work and more on blocking in values? Kinda like painting it? Not sure I understood 100% what you meant.

Gord

Rebeccak

Gord,

Re: Angels: LMAO! :scream:

Re: Drawing: Nice! I think the key with you is since you are experimenting so much, perhaps take things in two stages ~ the first stage where you get the basic stylization down (as you have above) and the second stage where you refine the piece in a second 15 minute session. I've seen you experiment a lot, which is fantastic, but one thing you could get trapped into is focusing too much on experimentation, and never taking any of the experiments to a finished level. You've got a great woodblock thing going on here in this last piece, and I would totally encourage you to explore it further / whittle it down a bit more to it's bare essentials, and give it more expression.

Nice work! :)

Cheers,

~Rk

15 min.

With this short a time frame, I'm not sure if I should be sketching or trying to do quick paints. Sketches always turn out better ('cause I've done more of them) but they're B&W and not always as pretty as paints.

Everyone,

I thought that it might be easier to have one thread devoted to the Reference Images for the 15 Minute Sketchathon, so that people do not have to go looking for them.

So ~ we'll do this as a trial. If it becomes too confusing, we'll remove this thread and go back to posting both Reference images as well as Sketches in one thread.

So ~ be advised:

There are now 2 Thread for the 15 Minute Sketchathon:

I5 Minute Sketchathon - Thread 1: Reference (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=298699&page=1&pp=15)

For Reference Images Only!

I5 Minute Sketchathon - Thread 2: Sketches (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=295498)

Trollboy,

You know, it's funny, because I posted the George Bellows painting which you used as a Reference not to be used as such, but just to note a similarity between another person's post ~ but perhaps it's a good idea to do every now and then a 15 Minute Sketchathon based on Master Drawings / Paintings / Sculptures. Makes sense, I suppose! Glad that you did this! And nice sketch!

Cheers, :)

i guess i must have been scanning the forum too fast. I thought the painting was posted as one to draw :) I've been scanning the pages for pics and then drawing - If i read it all i'll never catch up!

Good idea about the masters painting sketchathon. I think making studies from masters paintings is a time tested practice in academic art training. trying to do 15 minute versions would certainly be a challenge.

Great idea to put the reference images in a separate thread! :D

Siju,

Very cool, thanks for the links! You know, it would be terrific if you put all of the work hosted by your Photobucket account in your Anatomy Thread ~ I think there's some amazing stuff that isn't on your thread, and it would be great to see it all together!

Also, you should consider putting your website in your signature, as well as enabling people to view your website, which you can do all through the User CP (link at the top of the page) so that folks may visit your site. I wasn't able to enter the Studio Site, however it's fantastic that you have a school / training section, which you might also want to add to your signature.

Great stuff, looking forward to seeing more of your work! :)

Thanx again Rebecca,
Im part of the animation society as a first time director on a 3d series that i designed as well.
I would call myself a production designer and i keep exploring different styles all the time.
Ive worked as an animator for a brief stint,my interest for creating stuff independantly led me into pre production design and i believe my love for cinema is my reason for existence. Im young n I intend enjoying every bit of the long road ahead in becoming a complet artist.
My intial tutilage for any sort of drawing was under thomasphoenix.
I also derive a lot of content from comic book greats which prbly influence styling but since my trade is also bout deriving simple lines of design,I focus a lot on the art of removing.
I struggle between the want to be accurate and the need to depart! To me the essence is mood.

Fabulous!!! You know, it would be awesome if you could post a pic of the type of pencil you are using. I love the quality of the strokes you and Siju are making, and am curious to know what type of media you use. I will definitely have to try it! It looks a bit like Ritmo charcoal pencil, but I am unsure. If you can't post a pic, just the brand name and how you sharpen it would be awesome. Thanks! :)

Hi Rebecca I start out in the mornin with a staedler 4b when I struggle to find my line...very soon im with staedler 6b or 8b and by evening Im with my team of painters sketching on the wacom tablet.I use a mechanical sharpner and shave the pencil half blunt..keep turning it around if i need the sharp edge.

Thomasphoenix went to design school at age seventeen:)to study Graphic design and animation(not too long ago:D)spent five years there, was exposed to a huge resource center with tons of great books and great cinema:eek:!Wanted to one day draw like Michelangelo:love:,didnt know how to, started to read stuff .Burne hogarth was the beginining,Robert beverly hale was next, Perard was a constant companion,Bridgman came after ,of course Thomasphoenix would cross over into the real world for life drawing to test out his newly learnt theories from time to time:wise:!

Then he became an Animator(2d), then Animation Director ,learnt 3d meanwhile artistically and technically and shifted entirely to 3d animation, and then He decided to study filmmaking and cinematography ,because he wants to direct live action movies, because he luves movies sooo much.Suddenly he realized that his first love drawing had been taking a back seat for some time and he decided to post in cgtalk:thumbsup: that's it and hes back to drawing, and luvin it.

Siju Thomas

Rebecca ,pencils I use are Rotring tikky old model 0.5 mechanical pencil with camlin(Indian brand very soft) 2b lead and sometimes Kohinoor Dartmuth Clutch pencil with Kohinoor 6b lead(czech)
on executive bond 12 field paper.

I gotta say I think your strokes already convey the idea behind a sig as good as that monster you call a signature. I have been browsing these forums for quite a while before I signed in, have seen much more of you than only this and I think you are already establishing your own style.

So: let the strokes do the talking.:wise:

Mr.Mu- I thought people were gonna not like my loud blues in the picture. Lol. Yeah I know. People are now just starting to respect my strokes. Veiwers would think "oh he is decent" and not enough wow or awe factor. They respected my pencils waaay before my paintings. So I had to something different. I had to make some people mad and get turned off by my work just to get noticed. I think that it is paying off some what. Maybe on a piece the I will submit to the finished 2d gallery will sport a smaller signature. My works that I do in painter have the smaller and dull signature like the latest artwork that I have on my site. *ahem plug plug* see my forum signature In the mean time I will knock more people over with my business card lol.
Oh yeah nice work on the dicus thrower. I like the progress steps.

err, well...

I actually just wanted to tell you that this last sketch of yours is terrific. Looks much more defined in places than in some of the other quick sketches. How could you do that with a soft-edged brush?

Just took another look at it while typing - definitely my favourite sketch of rebeccak! The face and chest region is great, but even the half-defined areas like the neck and leg integrate well.

Ah...Michelangelo! I guess I should try doing the dying slave and rebellious slave from life as they are on exhibition in my home town right now. They look quite different in real life as do the drawings (some of them are TINY and incredebly delicate).
Last time I was there, it was still very busy and I couldn't get even 2 minutes to do a sketch without being pushed aside by other visitors.

Finals have eaten up a lot of my time lately. I needed to blow off a little drawing steam after spending all weekend on a chem presentation. So here goes - attempting the Mia Hamm soccer poses. I did a few gestures and then decided to develop the crouching one. I'll probably go back and do 5 and 15 minute attempts at the others tomorrow. BTW Falcor, it's inspirational to see someone left-hand it when the going gets tough :).

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c19/RoboMonkeyModule/2min_miakick.jpg

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c19/RoboMonkeyModule/2min_miacrouch.jpg

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c19/RoboMonkeyModule/5min_miacrouch.jpg

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c19/RoboMonkeyModule/20min_miacrouch.jpg

So, I went a little long on this one and then realized that the proportions were off. So I did a trace-over.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c19/RoboMonkeyModule/30min_miacrouch.jpg

On this I fixed some proportions and I noticed how easily and quickly value can be achieved by loosening up the hatching a little bit on side-strokes. Traceover put me at about 30 min total.

Drawing is the perfect cure for finals!

I think that ballpoint pen is a great medium, happy to see you use it! If you want I can post some stuff up later re: opposing curves and the like. I think what's missing in the poses is rhythm ~ that side~side action where curves are offset, eg:

(
__)
(
__)

etc.

Cheers! :)

i'd like that rebecca, very very much. i think this is one area where my work always suffers from my clinical/academic/instructional training.
when you have time, i'd dig seein' what you mean and how i can unlock that door. ;)
cheers!

Rebecca,I liked your sketch of the slave I think you pinned the essence pretty nicely.
there always is something more to a sketch when you dont give equal line weight or detail to all parts.:)

Shyam or should I call this Shyam-a-thon!! great enthu man:thumbsup:

ruffstuff,

Hehe, thanks! ;) Egad, it's funny, I've never forced myself to do drawings in this style in quite this fashion...hopefully, with practice, will adapt. ;)

Cheers, :)
