View Full Version : Sketchbook Thread of Gord MacDonald
Gord-MacDonald 11-19-2005, 04:09 AM I am starting up this thread as a focused initiative, to get my figure drawing skills up to par. No excuses now - I have committed.
The goal is to develop the skills required to draw any figure in any postion, from any vantage point, with any amount of detail, convincingly portrayed.

Nice. Gord!
You know, a medium I would really recommend for these types of studies is ballpoint pen. Works like a charm, and you can get a lot of detail / fine gradation / subtle shading. Charcoal/pencil tends to be a bit less accurate. Just a suggestion!
Cheers, :)

Thanks Rebecca, I am not sure I am on speaking terms with ballpoint pens these days, but you never know. This initial stuff looks like its going to be a bit messy, working with 'ideal' proportions feels a little AR at the moment, although I know there will be long term benifits. (I can't wait to get to the fun stuff! ;) )

Gord,
LOL, I hope that you and ballpoint pens can reconcile :scream: ~ really, they're a great medium! But of course, that's totally between you and the pens. :)
Good to see these studies. I would recommend perhaps trying to get more detail into these ~ making more finished drawings. Perhaps even drawing larger than the original, or using a grid. It might really help you to better see problems in proportion. Also, I would recommend doing detailed drawings of various anatomical structures ~ in the same manner and style as your beautiful portrait drawings. I think that would help a lot.
Cheers, :)

Rebecca - I totally agree with your suggestions of engaging in more detailed studies - (thats where I am headed), but first I am going to try and 'embed' the benchmark proportions etc. in my mind - the current drawings are kind of like writing down notes while studying for a test - it helps anchor the subject matter in the memory.
anyways - here is another quickie
(somewhat less than ideal - hehe)

Gord,
LOL! Counseling sounds perfect! :scream:  I have some unresolved issues with a sharpie myself...:scream:
Hmm, I think the proportions on the male in particular are a bit funny ~ but I do understand what you mean about just generally practicing proportions. :) I like going back and forth between detailed and quick myself. Keeps you sane! :)

HEY....Gord .. :)
GREAT to see you back posting your work on here again...
WOW...some really nice emotions captured...strong pieces.....:applause:
Think the first one posted on the previous page, frame #15 under sad expressions, is my favorite so far.
Simple and subtle, but very powerful, in the emotion and feeling it projects. I also really like the man right below that one, for basically the same reasons,...they are all nice for sure, but those two have a way of going far beyond what is seen, for me anyway..:)
Beautiful JOB....Gord...
HOPE to see lots more....SOON :bounce: :)

Heya Gord,
Good to see you posting again. :) I like your caricatures, you've always had a way with portraits! :) What I would love to see you do are more finished pieces, like digital versions of your lovely early pencil portraits - have you ever seen the work of David Kassan? He's an excellent oil painter in NY:

I think you could do lovely finished digital pieces, would love to see you refine these! :)

this drawing is a mere sketch, but making it was a powerful experience - I want to a much more complete drawing from the source image.
I look at the source image and feel sadness and horror, but also (somehow) connected to the person. I would like to know who she was, where she came from, her name, her childhood, family, friends...
I would like to see photos of her in happier times. I would like to know more about her.
She is to me enigmatic - like the couragous individual who stood before a column of tanks in Tiamin Sqaure, or the man who was photographed falling from the WTC in 9/11.
These images are horrific, but if approached with sensitivity enable us to reach a deeper sense of compassion for our fellow humans.

Hi...Gord...:)
Looks like you are really starting to get a nice feel for all of those subtle emotions that the human face is capable of, through expression...closer to your goal of having a face be more than just a face that you expressed a couple of years back I think... ...just a passing thought here....maybe use the same idea and approach as your doing with the faces, and do it with the hand/hands also...In combination with the emotions expessed in your faces, you might see if you can portray those same emotions with hand gesture along with the face, and with the face, in the same painting/drawing...might be interesting, and for sure a challenge,...plus it might really add more power to your paintings/drawings....can the hand/hands be more than just a hand/hands kind of thing, to go with your can a portrait/face be more than just a portrait/face thought....THOUGHTFUL hands..:scream:
Just a thought that came into my mind, as I was enjoying all of these great expressions and emotions that you have been capturing in your face series...KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK..Gord..

The last one is so sweet. The expression is very interesting and the focal point is clear. I also like those color studies, pretty chaotic.
Very expressive!

Hi Gordon, nice studies in your sketchbook!
What I like most are the caricatures,a lthough done so loosely you do capture the likeliness and expressions very well.
That fetus study is very nice too.
I also like that study in post 70, especially the nose and mouth area...
keep it up.

GREAT to hear your taking a life drawing class...AGAIN..Really looking forward to seeing the drawings from it.
I did the same thing last year myself, after about the same amount of years inbetween class as you...felt like the old man in the sea at first, but really ended up enjoying it as time went by...I ended up drawing really large, using conte crayons, and charcoals..hadn't done that in years..felt really good to get away from digital, and the computer for awhile actually...:)
ANYWAY..GOOD LUCK IN YOUR CLASS, AND ENJOY...

Hi Gord, I like your foodcourt and charicature sketches. Even though they're simple and sketchy, they've got a lot of form to them and they really do capture the character! :)
The digital painting of "Amy winehouse" I think would look better if you use more colors on the skin/hair. Different variations of the skin tone and also shadow color.

Hey Gord,
Love the caricatures. The line work has a lot of life.
Agreed with Johan. Very cool line sketch pf woman.
I see you are playing with values, good exploration.
What I would suggest is not to be afraid to make a definite statement of your lights. Cut into them with your eraser. you can always go back and soften the edge. A drawing is enhanced when there is a balance of soft and HARD edges.
Always a pleasure to have you stop by my thread and comment.

AztcFireFlower - thanks for the feedback (and sorry I am so late to respond - I have been away from cgtalk for awhile) I think your advice is well taken - I do tend to smude things a bit - your suggestion of putting more contrast into my images confirms my own self critisism. Thanks!

ALWAYS a pleasure stopping by your thread..never know what to expect.:D
I like the last one..great character.. I was also really likeing those close up photos of bugs and flowers ect. that you were taking awhile back..I bet if you could get in that close to some human faces, you would get some great results, seeing how you seem to have a natural nak for capturing the character of your subjects...would make great refference material for drawings/paintings that you could do at your own pace later on...Just a passing thought that crossed my mind as I was going through your thread..:)
Anyway...Hope you had a great holiday, and hope to see lots more of your creations in the coming year...:)

you know it's actually fun to draw in public (rather than "a task"), don't you agree?

I think it would be beneficial to make the arm more readable in silouhette, as now it sticks to the figure too much.

I love these! Very strong expressive features and I like the freedom about the way you apply your strokes. It's got a lot of your digital brushwork, you know?

Hi Gord,
very nice portrait, you captured the likeness very well :)
I would suggest starting with harder brushes first to clearly define areas, and then smooth them out with soft brushes later. This was a mistake I made before as well, to just blend everything together with large soft strokes, but then everything ends up blurry and out of focus.
You could however start with soft brushes and paint the details in the focus with a harder brush later to get the effect of soft focus portrait photography, that's also a good way :)

HEY Gord :wavey:
You are getting really good at those caricatures...without going to overboard on them..that's an art in itself,..and it looks like you have mastered it..
I regonized just about all of them right off..The ones I didn't, were ones that I probably don't know about anyway..Hard to keep up with all the new faces out there now days ..LOL
Anyway, ALWAYS a real pleasure seeing what you've been up to...Nice energy in that linework by the way..:)
TAKE CARE Gord..
Glenn
Hi Gord!
nice caricatures, my fav is the Slash one. Have you considered fleshing them out (colour and all)?

Hi Glen, Mu
yes I have thought about colour, but for now just getting the likeness and exaggerations is the challenge!
