Title: Decadent Progression (coursework)
Name: Godwin Koay
Country: Singapore
Software: Photoshop
Hi, this is my first post at CGTalk, so I guess it's only right to include a little introduction. I'm 18 and a student in Singapore, currently in the midst of my A-level exams, after which I'll be off to the army to "serve the country". Anyways, what's shown below (or above?) is my A-level art coursework which was completed about two months ago.
Since I had already posted this at the Sijun forums (which I've been frequenting for the past 3 years) before, here's the original post with its contents slightly edited:

Decadent Progression

In his endless pursuit of progress, man has built around him a Machine. It is a construction of utmost magnificence, but though man is its operator, subsistence, and champion, he relishes in the success of his own creation and becomes a slave to it, bound in perpetuity to its artificial nature of necessity. This is not some fantasy vision of a future world, it is right here and now, all around us – the Machine is an archetype of the world that chases after money mindlessly. Just what is this economic betterment we all strive for? Bigger homes, brighter children, healthier lives – everything in the definition of a modern society is tied down to the concept of money, so much so that it is ingrained within us all that such a “reality” is the true purpose of life. From the point we are "mouldable", lives are planned, expected and demanded as mere assets and investments towards the greater advancement of humanity. We become blindly driven by those around us and even ourselves to succeed within the framework of this Machine, expending all strength, emotion and commitment to ensure its eventual continuation.
Done in Photoshop 7 & CS2, original size is 90x127cm@300 dpi (identical for both), but they're presented as A1-sized (more or less) prints, framed and hung. I have had several people tell me that the two pieces shouldn't be placed side by side without a gap, and indeed, the prints are hung a few inches apart (I don't think web formatting can handle that, thus the presentation above).
It took about 3 months' on-off work, not inclusive of the other prepratory studies and (seemingly unnecessary) stuff that was done throughout the course of this year.
Detail:

http://godwin.ralert.net/aep/cwrwebp1.jpg
http://godwin.ralert.net/aep/cwrwebp2.jpg
Just some notes:
-I do realise that the perspective on each composition has become wrong (or so I think) towards the top and bottom ends, especially on the left piece, I admit that I have trouble visualising what it "should" look like, not least because I'm not completely familiar with lens-based media, but then I didn't really want to make it look fish-eyed and warped, so I kept all the vertical lines straight (which is also much easier to paint). In any case it lends to the work itself as I feel the continual verticals serve to emphasize the theme of upward growth (progress).
-The machines and structures featured are not meant to be fully functional, even though I did make it so that some obviously do work. It's a lot of figurative, metaphoric and symbolic elements explored prior to creating the work itself. I realise that lot of the platforms, buildings and facades are just not possible from a realistic architectual and engineering standpoint, and that is intentional as it creates a somewhat surreal atmosphere.
-The colours (that overabundance of green) are deliberate, I also know it isn't exactly a groundbreaking, innovative piece(s) of work or a masterpiece, but I never set out to make it one.
So I suppose that's all, here's (http://forums.sijun.com/viewtopic.php?t=39803) the original thread at the Sijun forums, which includes some talk and other images relating to the coursework (photograph of actual prints and certain prep work).
Any and all critique is of course welcome.

Thanks everyone!
misiek1125: Ah you probably mean sijun.com because I don't post at conceptart.org.
Durex Durpaneu: Mind elaborating on the "textures"? If you're talking about texture overlays, I tend not to use them because I haven't figured out how to use them effectively and in a way that adds to the work on the whole.

Very very nice but pleeeeaaaaase post a link to the ultra-high resolution image you obviously have. The image you've linked to doesn't allow anyone to appreciate all the effort you've put in.

The second thing that crossed my mind was: This would be a worthy entry for the "Spectacular" Challenge - simply because the first thing I thought while looking at the overall paintings and then the details was: Wow that is seriously spectacular.
I am so envious of people with such environment/architectural skills (but in a good way) ;)
You have my five stars for this :)

Thanks again all!
Revelation_Space: How high would you like it? Honestly I'm not quite keen on putting print-quality close-to-full-sized versions of it online, besides the huge filesizes (which is why I did small crops instead), it also makes more sense for me to hold on to the ultimate raw works so as to preserve some kind of... exclusivity, if it does go into print, or something. Okay fine I was afraid people would "steal" it, but is my fear unfounded? Regardless, how high-res would you (and everyone else) like to see it? Or is there just a certain part you'd like to see? I may upload new ones at a later date.
Kyena: Thanks :) but I don't think that's possible because I didn't start on the work within the time period, and it was meant as school work. Also, I've seen people's threads, I don't think I'm cut out for that kind of work, both the quality and quantity, as well as to have the courage to put the earliest concepts up for critique. That doesn't mean I won't try though, for any future challenges.
Perhaps this is a good time to ask, if I wanted to get the work printed (and sold), is there any established service that can help handle all the work, including shipping and payment? Or is it usually DIY?

Hey,
Awesome details! I especialy love the "naive" (in a good way) approach. All those huge dented wheels and such. It reminds me of Metropolis. So does the theme of your picture.
It's realy expresive which is hard to do with architecture :)
Keep it up.

stunning work, the level of details is amazing.

Ballistic Publishing (I believe its called) works with CGTalk (as far as I can tell). They usually make books with work posted here.
I would love a big poster of this man. Awesome job.

My thoughts exactly. Simply awesome piece. This deserves a large print to show off all that detail, good to know you've done it. I would put that on my wall, no doubt. Keep us posted on whether or not you ever arrange to sell prints or posters of this.
From the Sijun thread it looks like you printed both panels separately. I think it would work well as a single large print as well - with a black border between, perhaps narrower than the version you posted here.

As has been said, this is some fantastic work. What I'm really impressed with is your commentary and though process, and I really appreciate you including this in your post. I wish more people posted their thought process, as it really helps to push your work past the point of illustration and into the realm of true art. Good luck in the army, and definitely keep us updated on any prints you plan to sell!
Absolutely breathtaking! Just lovely. You are also quite humble about your ability. All the more reason why your work is special. There had been a thread recently about what makes a "mature artist". Your attitude is the very definition of a "mature artist", in my opinion.

really nice images! cool style! But there is something wrong with perspective, that catches my attention. It's the circles! I did a quick mockup of your image, to show what I mean.
If you don't know the "drawing ellipses" tutorial of Scott Robertson, here's a link: http://www.drawthrough.com/tutorials/index.html
anyway, nice work!

It isn't voluntary. A lot of countries require military service from men and women, his happens to be one of them.

Thanks again everyone!
aaron111: I don't know if I stretched the file dimensions too large, but each file is already 600mb with width 90cm @ 300 dpi. I don't know what merging them will do to my computer. :P
woadiestyol: Thank you. I included it mostly because I had to do it, but regardless I felt that the message is part of the art work.
ekah: Thank you, I'm really flattered. I just try my best because, well, I believe humility is something very important in life.
founded: Ask my Prime Minister. Kidding, but like smurfbizkit said, it's 2 years' mandatory national service.
DerPapa: I do know of his tutorial, but I don't know, your overpaint looks incorrect. Take a look at this:
http://www.drawthrough.com/images/tutorials/e_5.jpg
My ellipses may be a little flat, but I'm quite sure the shape is correct. And note that all major axes are vertical.
But I may be wrong, if I am, then it's really something big I have to fix. EDIT: Actually I think they're wrong the more I look at it... I eye-balled almost everything and I think I actually used the ellipse tool for that part, which is definitely the biggest mistake.
smurf (why 2?): Hawhaw. I don't know, I don't quite like some of my past work, but I may post the handshake one.
I will keep everyone updated if and when I do get my works to print, but I don't want to rush things, I feel that I'm not "there" yet, especially after seeing John Wallin Liberto's new prints, they're amazing.
aaron111
11-21-2005, 04:47 PM
I think the ellipses look fine as they are. The overall perspective looks a bit "stylized" to begin with, but still works quite well.
Yeah, combining two 600mb files could pose a problem, I can see why you kept them separate

Very cool concept and well illustrated. Maybe the perspective isn't accurate but it looks very cool man. I like that industrial look of it, the color and tone and highlights. Wish I could see it moving.

Hey bro, im from singapore too and i know exactly what inspires this piece of work of yours. Great painting, the perspective doesn't bother me at all. The effort you put into this is apparent, very well done. And good luck escaping from this totalitarian country.

Hey dude.
If you're 18 AND a student AND joining the army, I hope they give you a brush to carry and tell you to invade a school to teach art. That's a really original, really cool, piece of work. I'm glad you won an award. Much deserved. I hope you keep up with your skills. Nice work.

Awesome work. Excellent lighting, scale, details, I love the stylized "art deco" style.
Good luck in the army. I hope you have fun - you'd better have, actually, considering you're one of those lucky bastards born just at the right time to get those 6 months shaved off. I am looking forward ot seeing more stuff from you. Cheers.

Wow, I wasn't even aware I got the award! It's really an honour and also great encouragement. Thanks for all the kind words as well. Although army life leaves me with little time to paint these days, it doesn't mean I won't ever paint again, in fact I'm sure the exprience will serve as new inspiration and perspective for future works.
Thanks again, I too hope that I'll have new work (worthy of such praise) to show soon =)

Im a slave to my PC and PS2 for sure...and DVD players, Mp3 player....bla2 bla2....its sad i know but hopefully we wont come to the day when machine tells us what to do. (Which Im denying the fact that it has already begun.)
Scary shit really.
Anyway..your 18 and if your first post has an impact of a huge meteor to the feeling, You got a universe of potential! Give us more stories..and pictures of course!;)
