How's it going everyone!

I'm about to graduate from SCAD and I just finished the latest cut of my reel. The main focus of the reel is on texturing, shading, and lighting but there's also some particles and compositing on it. The main programs used were Maya and mental ray but Renderman and Houdini were also used. Textures were painted in Photoshop and Deep Paint and comping was done in After Effects and Shake. Special thanks to all of the great professors and friends, and to SCAD for providing us with such phenominal facilities. I hope you enjoy it and C & C's are always welcomed and appreciated. California here we come!

Hey there Rich,

I am a VFX Major up at SCAD as well, I don't believe we have ever met personally, if I have - I blame my terrible memory with names/faces for not recalling you. I have seen your work floating around before and really enjoyed your stairway shot - beautiful rendering. Just wanted to congratulate you on a great demo reel - I am sure I will see it again at the VFX Show this quarter (I submitted something as well).

Most impressive. Your lighting rocks! I'm super glad you included a texture breakdown of your girl, it was very helpful! I am working on applying SSS to my character right now, and the hand-painted layers are resourceful. Thanks and good luck out there! Oh and I really like your overall look, very cool, and clean, and employable. ;)

Thank you all for the kind words. Yeah, I don't believe we've met personally Will. Hopefully we'll get the chance before the quarter lets out. I'll definately look out for your stuff in the show.

aestheta - I'm glad that the breakdown could be helpful. Thanks...and hopefully you're right.

Is there anyway you could either send me or post higher res versions of your SSS maps?... that'd be super cool.

Appreciate it HellBoy! It's kinda sad that college is over, but I'm ready to get going with an actual job.

aestheta - I put together a little infosheet/tutorial on texturing with the misss_fast_skin shader. Included are some examples of the textures maps. I hope this helps.

Hey, thats a great Demo! Love the work! I am a VFX student up at Sheridan. I am just wondering how long your program was?

Good work man.

The SCAD program is 4-year, unless you're in architecture and then it's 5.

Very nice stuff, I particularly liked the tornado and the lava. I personally would maybe put the girl's face at the end. There was just something about it that didn't seem quite right. I realise that doesn't help too much . . . perhaps it's the eyebrows, the arch way too much and are too long, forming almost an upside down "U" over each eye.

Good luck in the job hunt

I've seen you working late nights on that girl in the houdini/shake room. Its really nice to see it and your other work in a finished state. Great real, well cut.

Thanks for the crit Double Supercool. I see what you're saying. Hopefully I'll have some time to change it...and I was actually thinking of moving that piece to the end. Maybe I will now. I appreciate it!

mikepkes - AAh yes, the Houdini/Shake room. Oh how I'll miss that place. Thanks for the comments...and best of luck to you finishing up your quarters at SCAD.

Nice reel. I just finished my studies at SCAD as well. I like the twister and lava, especially. Though there could be more work on the girl to make her more realistic. Also, the back of her head could use some work with the modeling, but since the hairs covers it, it doesn't really matter. Again, great reel and best of luck.
