View Full Version : Creating Cloud Textures
Invid 11-17-2005, 07:25 AM Do any of you kind folks have any tips when it comes to creating cloud textures for applying to spheres as in planets? I am on a mission to create my own high quality planet model but the cloud layer has stopped me dead in my tracks. I don't want to use a pre-existing one but nothing I have attempted looks good at all. The actual planet texture isn't too difficult but boy that darn vapor layer! Anyways thanks for reading this!

You could layer in some cloud photos (Google Image Search). . . I sometimes use a layer mask with a cloud filter, but that's better for mist than cloud.

Some very high-res cloud images here

I guess I am relagated to using photos. I'll try my hand at fractal generation or something. The last thing I want to do is use a pre-existing photograph though. Thanks all.

Well if you have DarkTree, they have a pretty good shader for clouds. If you have 3ds Max, you can get SimbiontMax for free (http://www.darksim.com/html/simbiont.html), which allows you to do some tweaking of the Ether map shader (http://www.darksim.com/Repository/ba_Map/).
There's also the free SuperNoise procedural for 3ds Max 4/5 from Blur Studios. I like the perturb controls in this one, it does pretty good mists and wispy clouds. Not updated for Max 6/7/8 though, and difficult to find since Blur pulled it.
