View Full Version : Still&Animation: Customs Frigate stills, deckplans, and inner-city landing sequence
ZaonDude 11-19-2002, 11:06 PM Here she is...
She's VERY fast (see deckplans for internal engine layout), carries 128 marines on board, and potent weaponry (advanced rotary blaster twin-links).
Here is a diagram and ortho shots, plus some data: http://zaon.scifi-meshes.com/ZAON_Ships_Imperial_CustomsFrigate_2.jpg
Here is a full-size picture: BIG PIC (http://zaon.scifi-meshes.com/ZAON_Ships_Imperial_CustomsFrigate_1.jpg)
Here are the deckplans which are highly detailed and even show crew quarters, etc.: (strongly recommend you do a right-click, Save Target As for much faster/better onscreen performance) Deckplans PDF (http://zaon.scifi-meshes.com/ZAONdeckplans_ImperialCustomsFrigate.pdf)
Here's a still frame from a movie of the frigate landing at the major port city on Eridon:
http://zaon.scifi-meshes.com/ZAON_Ships_Imperial_CustomsFrigate_3.jpg
And, here's the actual full movie of the ship landing (includes sound design by Matt Grunau {rapier} and video animation/rendering by me):
Self-Extracting .exe FULL VIDEO movie (http://zaon.scifi-meshes.com/EridonArrival.exe) (7.5 mb, BINK)
Enjoy!
Incidentally, I'm working on a much better-looking movie sequence of this ship involved in a high-speed chase through a futuristic downtown city without the flaws this film has... will post some preview shots after a bit...

Those deckplans......
Did you design them yourself? If so COOL!! That looks like a hell of alot of work and kickass ideas!!!
That is one cool ship, and the animation is really cool.
I would have liked to see it land in a 3d environment as well. The ships lighting doesn't match scene. But I bet you dont need me to tell you that.. hehe
I like.

the sketch view, the ship itself, AMAZING! The diagram looks like it came right out of a professional manual.
The animation looks quite realistic, but the ship dosn't seem to be casting any shadow at all. It is also landing in the middle of what looks like a parkinglot. I think that when you make a full CG backdrop, it will look better.

Thanks, guys.
Rudity: yeah, I made the deckplans from scratch in Illustrator. You can zoom into the pdf and pick up pretty good detail in there ;-)
Stephen: Thanks. Actually, if you grab and compare the first and last frames you'll see considerable 'darkening' of the surrounding pavement under the ship, the problem is that it happens too gradually to really notice and not really enough. There should be more shadowing, which is an error on my part given that the 'parking log' is actually real 3d and not part of the photograph. The photograph ends at the street curb way behind the ship. The pavement, including the raytraced environmental reflections from the photograph and landing ship, are all real.
And to be clear, the new video I'm making isn't a redo of this one, it's entirely a different setting and is a chase (not a landing).
Now, if I could just get away from my online porn long enough to actually work on this new vid... hahahahaha

for some reason the video is too dark for me to really make out anything... i do see the background and the top of the ship.. but thats nearly about it. something wrong with my gamma settings or what ???
and those deckplans are funking crazy..... :D
a) how long did you spend on them
b) whats your background? ever did something related to architecture ????
ps. theres porn online ?

Not sure... sounds like a gamma prob or a monitor with a fading tube or brightness turned down too far. A good test is: does the still frame look any different? If you can see the still frame okay, then the video playback has problems.. let me know (I'm curious).

Nope, no background in it.. just a multi-talented performer ;-) The plans took about 4 full days to design... longer than I would have liked, but I had to set some standards for future ship designs that all fit within this RPG/wargame's technology standards.

and the gamma it was.. i forgot i played around with my monitor settings earlier since i had problems with a gfx card. hitting the reset switch sure worked magic.
now i can see the vehicles on the ground and the underside of the ship and everything.. love the swooping motion of it..

nice. The ship is kinda cg looking. Ok, itz my 1st time looking at your stuff but is the ship hull made of earth materials? If it is, why would the custom people paint it grey?
Funny question i guess. I thought maybe a darker iron looking would be better. It will give it a "don't mess with me look".
Edit: managed to download the bink video! The bg looks damn still. i think it will look spot on if there is a bit of panning like layering the cityscape.
2. maybe give a wee bit of depth in the compo.
3. maybe have a wee bit of camera shake to show the size of the ship.
4. passing through air will create heat. Maybe a wee bit of heat distortion will be nice.
5. the landing marker... not nice.
6. the shield plate for the landing gear. it looks flimsy and weak. Just imagine if there is a heavy battering at the joins... the landing gear will have a shit of a time to unload. Might it not be better if the underside of the landing gear is also the shield plate?
7. Same thing for the boarding bridge or platform (donno whatcha call it). it looks weak. If this is a diplomatic ship is one thing... but not for a runner.
Hey, sorry if i sound like a bitch. Well, this post IS in the critique section afterall. Cheers!

Whoa. derelict has just bitch slapped zaondude royally. But at least it was in a constructive way. ;)
I think the crits are only for the good and should be considered useful. They are very good points. I am getting out of here before a catfight breaks out. :D ;)

I was goign to go into detail about some crits, but the i saw derelict's post. I second everything he says. One more thing, wouldnt the platform come down a little later? Just for say saftey reasons? And maybe the ship's springs would rebound a little faster? Maybe a little bit of a landing lights on the ship to ight the ground? Looks great, great presentation as well.

Thanks, guys.
Actually, I'm the sorta guy that likes constructive criticism.. helps me improve!
Most of the suggestions are ones I already agree with.. but I'm not following the bit about "landing gear shield plates".
Also, the question about the 'safety' of waiting for the gangway to drop I already considered but then realized that in this setting it's not really all that unsafe and people of the future (especially military) will be all about time and efficiency, and so I chose to go with quick.

ZaonDude can you post/link to a non .exe movie?
Can't run .exe here but would really like to have a look at the movie :) .

If you're a Mac user, use this: http://www.radgametools.com/down/bink/BinkcMac.HQX to select and play the .exe file.
If you meant you couldn't play them for another reason, lemme know. Another option is to download the radgametools.com player and use it to select and play the .exe file as well on a PC.

If only I had the skill to do that.
You've got major talent there, Justin. Maybe someday I'll get you to teach me how you do it. Among other things that is ;)
