I'm about to learn texturing with Maya and I'm scared shitless. When I look at other peoples works and their textures I feel small and like making my own textures will be the first thing I've run into that's completely beyond me. My question is, is using premade textures made by other people or taken from a common texture stock site an accepted practice in 3D Design?

For instance if you spotted a floor made out of a wood texture you've seen on a texture site would you discredit the artist?

If you are going to use premade textures (ie someone else's textures) the honourable thing to do would be to credit the person or site where you use the texture from.

Well that's a given and it doesn't answer my question

Answer to first one: As far as I know it is, as long as you credit the artist/location you got the texture from.

Answer to second one: Depends on what the person is looking for. If they are only looking for a modeler, they will focus on the model. Texture and lighting would serve as a reference for that model.

I mean't for like 3D shorts. If you saw a 3D short that used multiple textures that you recognized from a texture site, is that kind of thing frowned upon or accepted? I'm not just talkin about any old random animation made by one guy who's an intermediate, I mean the high quality amateur 3D shorts.

If it looks good then it is good in my opinion, but most likely a texture taken from a stock collection will look like crap when applied without editing. You almost always need to color correct, add layers of dirt, etc to make it fit in the scene. So if you recognize textures from a stock collection, it would probably mean not much effort has been put into the work.
