Hi

Yesterday i replaced my P4 and Asus P4C800 mobo out with a X2 and an Asus A8N-SLI mobo.
After i got it working i ran a repair installation of WinXP Pro and all that went fine until it was ready to reboot to continue with the installation. However, as it booted up it showed a STOP message for a fraction of a second and just rebooted, this happend over and over. Finally had to take a picture with my digital camera to see what the error message was.

STOP 0x000000007E (not sure how many 0s)

I guessed it had to do with some conflicting driver issues so i did a fresh XP installation on a different partition and that worked fine, it works.

Is there anyway that i can get my old XP back or somehow copy the old settings / registry / emails and such to my new XP ?

If i were to get back into my old installation would i then have to hook up the harddisk to the old motherboard + CPU in order for it to boot.
Can i fix my problems by simply removing the CPU, gfx card and maybe other stuff from the device manager?

Windows XP does not like BIG hardware changes like that. It has built in "security" features to prevent this sort of activity. Even then, when installing to a new motherboard and CPU it is ALWAYS a good idea to install XP (or any other Windows) fresh. This allows the installer to configure the system for your specific hardware.

As for your old emails, and data. You should be able to see that partition from your fresh install of windows. Simply burn or copy over the data you need to a safe place. Once you're done with all your backups format the drive completly and start fresh.

You can save out your e-mail as a backup file, it's under file import/export. Copy the other folders like favorites, ect....

I agree, never try and repair from a change like that. In fact, I never repair I always do a fresh install at least once a year during my upgrade cycle.

Outlook had no problems importing my old folders and emails thankyfully :)

As you guys suggested i'm just gonna backup my stuff and format the other XP installation. I just know i'm gonna forget to backup something i need months from now.
Its such a difference how fast XP boots up after a fresh install so i kinda like it like this anyway.
