-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey talent...talent...where'd you go, huh? *looks under bed* Damn. Guess the only thing to do here is start a WIP thread :D.
In the three months without a PC, I kinda let my art slip...a lot...and the thing is by then my newest pieces ([url="http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=257883"]Self Portrait (http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/9178/vargas016xn.jpg) and My Life (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=263276)) were old, so I'm totally wanting to trash them - but can't because I've gotten much worse. Heh, I'm not looking for sympathy - here I go with the practise practise practise. So join the fun with the sketches, tutorials and experiments and whatnot, in Ailsa's fun quest to discover her hidden talent. Woot.
Be very brutal.

This just started as a rough sketch of a nice ref pic I found on domai:
http://pics.livejournal.com/x_ailsa_x/pic/0000b788
which I was sketching to practise my anatomy...I started to quite like it though, so I've done a couple more hours work on it. Probably couldn't consider it an independant piece of art, since it's way too similar to the ref pic...lets think of it as an...experiment hah. Lots more blood to come (sorry! >_<), going to do some more work on that swirly thing next...then the face...I think.

Comments and critiques appreciated as always :)

Great stuff werewolf. :D
Are you trying to get her as close to your ref as possible, or merely an interpretation?

Arggh, I just took a look at this on my college monitor - the colours are totally messed up  on my home screen the colours are very dark and very saturated with lots of constast. Uh oh.
JM: Thank you for the encouragement, I just wish it would return a bit faster heh!
Eddieellis: Bua ha ha, I am rather sick and twisted at times yes
Martin: Thanks dude :D It started off with my just trying to mimic the model as closely as I could, but now I'm trying to alter it as much as possible to turn it into an independant picture.

Small update @ 6 hours:
http://pics.livejournal.com/x_ailsa_x/pic/0000fyeh
Not had a lot of time to work on it, but fixed some of the things that were the most obvious. Big hugs to 3dRaven and Urgaffel for helping me with some great crits - I still need to fix those breasts but I quickly made the closer nipple larger in the meantime.
As per some advice, added some petals resting on the shoulder to hopefully help the layer interact more, fleshed out the arm, also curved that cut more and added some irritated skin. Just some quick playing with colours on the skin, want to add all the gashes first before I really start any proper shading on it. Will likely sort out the face next or work on that goldy thing.

Thanks for the comments everyone, keep them coming :)
Sacha: Thank you honey :D will try not to disappoint!
Lemog: Nice to see you here Frenchie  Hehe, I don't know why, maybe it's bad taste on my behalf, but I am suddenly very very interested in blood. At first I just thought it would be an interesting addition to the picture, a bit of the ol' shock factor...but the fact of the matter is I'm very very sensitive and the more I waded through these screwed-up-in-the-head websites, the more I felt compelled to give it my all. Some of the pictures actually made me physically sick at one point. Ugh, opened a can of worms...
W!L: Thank you :) I agree completely, the skin is very drab and dull currently, heh I blame the monitor! The colours were kinda screwed...hopefully I'm starting to add more interesting variations to it now, 3draven had the wonderful idea of adding a warm and cold light sorce to contract each other. The reference picture is from Domai (http://www.domai.com/) - some great stuff on there.

Okay girl... now, I really understand your motivation...
in fact, there's 2 motivationss for you... the first, certainly the most important is to increase your drawing and anatomy skills... certainly as everybody here...
...and the second, something to add a new interest point of your creation, with something odd but very interesting, which fascinate you, even if that make you silly...
I know this feeling... I don't like so much the blood and all that things very creepy... or surgical...
That remember my participation to the Cgtalk "machineflesh" challenge... I started to create a pregnant woman with all inner parts, as bones of course, but with muscles (not the worse), also the organs... and of course, I'm not a specialist of that (I'm always very afraid by the medical stuff) but I've need documentation (for that, really easy), but also textures.
After many search on the net without good results...
I decided to contact a student in surgical, in an hospital in romania... a guy very simpathetic (strange not ? hahaha)... who send me a big collection of photos, of organs (persons dead often with serious diseases or infections) more of 200 photos very hard and horrible (imagine open and isolated rib cages with mechanical apparatuses...).
I studied all that during several hours, I were almost sick. But the horror with fact places at the interest, but of course, still not of the pleasure.
I thus carried out textures which I needed for my creation. But as taken the care to carry out a certain number of tiled textures as we finds now on my textures website.
If someones had told me some time earlier than I would carry out this kind of thing, I would certainly have said that was impossible. And yet, the interest and this fascination were most strong, because there was a goal.
I hope to see nearly some good updates here... seeya Ailsa...

nice painting. her body is great. the face seems too under-defined to me. it lacks texture and contrast, in particular the forehead and the cheeks. the ear is messed up. it is hard to tell the anatomy from your reference because the image is compressed, and, unfortunately, that traslated to your work. the top of the ear shouldn't be so narrow. in the photo the front part of the helix is just covered up by hair, it does not start after the tuft. check out some anatomical reference (atlas of human anatomy for the artist, by Stephen Rogers Peck being my favorite). i really dislike the yellow floral thingy, it is distracting. also, the way the japanese wraps around the woman is strange and the question mark looks odd/inauthentic mixed with hiragana and kanji in this context. use 「か」 instead.

Hey Elsie... nice work you have going on here. I know from personal experience how difficult it is to do colour pics working from black and white reference, so I think you're doing a great job here. Love the blood.. that gash on her side is really well done. If you're after some rather icky reference for bloodiness and gore, try www.smyw.com I think that's the right url, it stands for show me your wound... but I recommend not eating while you do. It's where I looked when I wanted to do rotting flesh on zombies...
I would agree with tobey about the yellow floral thingy... it interferes with the depth of the picture as I'm not entirely sure where in the image it's supposed to be. But the rose petals are a nice touch, as are the symbols in the background. More updates please!!

i looked at your image and the reference for a second time, and have changed my mind about the ear. in the reference, the girl is turned away from the camera some. providing her ears are petite and protrude somewhat, they would appear quite narrow from that angle. however, in your image, the depth of the jaw and the position of the ear suggest a profile of the girl, not that she is turned away. i think you need to move the ear and the jaw line forward a little. the jaw of the girl in the photo is not so angled and doesnt go so far back.

waaaaaah damn , i was attracted buy what was written in the background ? is it you who wrote it?
it reminds me about a 19 y/o girl who killed herself 2 years ago, her mother found a letter adressed to her boyfriend saying how much she was sorry. (very sad story)
you are doing a nice work expressing the feelings of the girl , waitng to see the final piece:thumbsup:

Looks good, only thing in the colors your skin tones do not vary that much, look at your photo the shadows are dark and highlights are light, Dont worry about the big shifts in colors, It looks great but if you boosted the contrast a bit ^_^
Thats just my 2 cents.

Hey guys, thanks for all the comments :)
Lemog: Wow, that sounds like very intense research for you picture, I wish I had the resources to do that! It definitely paid off, because I took a look at that entry and it look great. Speaking of challenges...when are we getting that kingsize version on your Specatcular? Huh? Huh? *pokes*
Tobeythorn: Thank you for a lot of good point. I agree completely that the face is much to undefined as it is, I hadn't really spend more than a few quick minutes on it at that point - I'm up to about twelve hours now so I shall update once I get back from college, started some work on the face now. Good catch on the jaw being too far back, will be fixing. As for my use of a question mark on the sentence, my original thoughts were that is would give non-japanese readers an almost manga like hint - as per my understanding of the language, I wouldnt not use "ka" in that first sentence when speaking so I used an alternative there. Although from an aesthetic standpoint, I can see what you mean and may alter that.
Zephyri: Thanks a lot Sam, bookmarked that website. It was suprisingly hard for me to find any sites like that, took me a good hour heh. Hmm, I was worried about the yellow floral thing too, I am currently planning to render it gold and have it fading into the background as there are other almost collage type elements I have been planning to add such as a moon in the background (coming in next update later today) - I think I best post two versions, one with all my random crap that I decided to include, and one without heh.
Samsed: Oh good, so my Japanese made sense then? As a non-native speaker I was kinda worried that I would have made at least one glaring error there somewhere! That does sound like a sad story, strangely enough I wasn't really thinking of death in the picture, more a sense of desperation. Thank you very much for your comment :)
Archerion: Good idea about the contrast, a few people have mentioned this to me - the next update will have much stronger contrasts, hopefully the colours will appear closed to how they originally were on my screen! I'm really relying on other peoples comments on the colours in this since my monitor badly needs calibration, thank you.
Update on the way guys :wip: !

Update @ 12 hours:
http://pics.livejournal.com/x_ailsa_x/pic/0000s5bk
Okay so I've changed everything I mentioned in my post above. I'm not sure if I've altered the contrast too little or too much, advice would be appreciated. Will work on the petals and vine next to see if I can really see if they're going to fit in the picture or not. Am going to alter the incorrect lighting on the eyelid and start some serious shading and detailing on the skin, rather than leaving it all soft and painted. More cuts to come. Am also going to try moving the moon over to one side to break up the symmetry.
Heres the bare version:

Nice update there, it certainly has more effect. Thing that most pops out in the colours and contrast line of thought is that the blood seems too red, the reflected colour would be , I assume , more mingled with colours from the environment, it will integrate it more closely to the skin. Add some blueish reflections and som purples I guess. Since it's one of the key points on her it should work right?

I was just waiting till I drew the marker pen version! Nyah :p!
JM: Thank you :) I thought that too that the blood now looks too red (strangely I didn't alter the contrast on that layer either! Just the skin and backdrop) but I wasn't sure if it was just my screen - shall fix pronto!

Nice work sweetie! Some parts that can really bring out the drawing are for one, the chin/neck, another part is the nose and eyes I think... Damn nice photograph though.
Hey werewolf honey, its really coming together. Having seen the wip from scratch I can certainly see you've come a long way.
I have one observation, and am scared to mention it, because you might just come and bite me with your long fangs. Its about the expression on the face of the girl. On your reference it seems quite natural that her expression would look that way. But in your painting, the girl is hurting herself, taking chunks of skin off her body. I can imagine that would hurt like hell, even if the pain is self induced. I do not see any expression on her face.
I hope you work something into her face showing how she is reacting to the emotional torture that has driven her to the physical torture. Double the pain.
Anyway, my hat goes off to you girl :)
Shall I take my metal collar off now?

Lemog: Heh, the ducks are a fitting addition, no? Don't look a tad out of place at all :D I think I shall keep them.
Derby: Thank you :) I will be sure to concentrate on those areas in particular. Theres lots of nice photographs like this on Domai, it's a nice site.
Queenie: *snap snap with the fangs* How dare you correct me, woman! This is not allowed! Into the cage you go! :p I actually completely agree with your point, I had sorta thought it to myself in passing but was waiting to see if anyone else would mention it - I'll try and reset some of the features on the face to show agony, like curl the lip and...uh...*starts making faces in the mirror again*. Although I don't think you should take of the collar, or the hat. It suits you. :D
Hopefully an update tomorrow...*yawn*...so tired...I will work...

I wasn't even going to post this one, you guys are all evil for persuading me haha - decided to take a break from twisted lady and work on a picture I began when I was slightly drunk that started to turn out pretty nifty :hmm: .
Don't know whats going on with that background, just there at the moment for the colour values. Still not finished any of the blocky shading, so still got a few hours to go before I start refining the shading and adding texture. Not a style I'd usually go with, so let me know what you think :)
(I'm sorry, mother).

Yes, you're right... very bad... and in the same time very good Ailsa...
I appreciate a lot this kind of design, very graphic... and the subject... of course... very inspiring :scream:
Just maybe the hairs and clothes appear a bit flat comparing to the rest, especially with the skin, the face and legs, with really good shapes... very good stuff

Lemog: :p Hehehe, "inspiration", if that's what the French call it . You're very right about the basque being flat, I'm hoping to work the highlights and shadows into it next - I love experimenting drawing different fabrics, and satin is proving to be quite a challenge. I can't draw leather to save my life, so I'm dreading starting on the whip heh.
Hair is my absolute favourite, favourite thing to draw, so I've been trying to restrain myself from doing any more work on it until I got the rest of the pic around level with it - excellent that now is the time I can go and render it till my hearts content *rubs hands together gleefully*...
Squiblet: :D Whee, glad you like so far, Enkeli.
Queenie: Hah, maybe I should be calling your mother to tell her you been pimpin' again :wise:? Hehe, a sketch as promised this evening. ^_^ You know I love the sketchathon honey :arteest:

So this is my latest idea in my bumpy road to self improvement - I am going to spend a month or two aping art from my favourite artists in the hopes that I will pick up something by some sort of osmosis :curious:
Starting here with the great Alberto Vargas, pinup legend etc...I have also been studying the work of George Petty who was really the original "vargas", although I really dislike his weird anatomy and chubby faces, I much prefer Vargas' stuff. Though as a dancer I find the constant use of pointe shoes in Petty's art fun...anyway if you have the time go check their work out. I'll probably be doing more Vargas girls next as they are the simplest, then maybe something by Hajime Sorayama (another favourite of mine). Be warned that some of this stuff gets quite graphic, I guess I shall have to chose carefully which to post as I'm not sure where the CGS stands on that kind of thing ;)
About 7 hours here, messed the angle of her bottom, it curves under in the original, also the legs are off, but all in all, for a sort-of-kind-of-quickie, it turned out okay. Ha, it almost pains me to say that... *wanders off muttering to self*
