shiteloads of toots on highend3d.com of all types of complexities.
the default renderer in maya is v.powerful and ppl have written all kinds of things to fake and produce most of the high end effects we all crave after in our images. Subsurface scattering, caustics, global lighting, diffuse effects, blah blah blah.. you'll find these on numerous websites.
www.computermanuals.com is a good site to find numerous maya manuals of all kinds of complexities
hope this helps

have you read the manual (which includes a lot of tutorials) ?
have you checked out the sticky tutorial thread ?
do i lack phantasy ?
there's no need to buy any renderer for maya - maya's built in renderer is powerful - now that mental ray comes for free with maya 4.5 you have two horses to ride on - fortunately nobody can complain anymore about maya's rendering options
