i think it's a normals problem, try choosing Edit Polygons>Normals>Soften/Harden with angle 179.

btw i think there is an option to soften normals automaticaly, cause i don't face such problems :)

Ok i tried the Soften/Harden method which worked perfectly at 90, but I still am trying to figure out how to do it with out having to use that option everytime. I know there is away, but I can't figure it out.

I Have talk to many people now about this problem. I even tried reinstalling maya, and still no luck.

I check in the options for extrude, but there was no option for smoothing angle.

I am using Maya 6.5

I dont use Maya but its pretty simple to fix...

Select Polygons > Tool Options > Keep faces together

Or in the Channel editor change Faces Together from off to on

Most of the time I just keep, keep faces together turned on. I have tried it both in many different situations with the same results. I know if I just use Soften/Harden edges it works. I am just trying to figure out a way that is does it automaticaly. I think I am just gonna stop being lazy :p But I know there is a way, I downloaded the PLE version of maya to see if the same thing happened, but it didn't it worked perfectly.

I really don't see the problem here... Maya 6.5 DOES have smoothing angle, it's in the Extrude Face Options..of course. A value of 30 will work

good luck

Post the file as an attachement so we take a look, its easy as this.

Maya is always predictable, maybe you should learn the tools also by spending sometime in the readme files
