Jumping from Maya to Max and it's like starting all over again.
Many of the things I did in Maya seem to be difficult to find in the Max tutes.
Navigation/Viewports
Do I really have to click the buttons in the lower right corner every time I want to move?
In Maya you could hold down 'alt' and use mouse movements to naviagate a scene.
I'm resigned to having to right click a viewport to activate it, but how do I maximize/minimize viewports? In Maya whatever viewport the mouse pointer was over was the active view port and you could press shift bar to maximize/minimize viewports.
Is there some sort of a Maya to Max help guide somewhere?

Objects
How do I move the pivot point of an object?
I had a scene with three objects which I grouped and the pivot point seemed to reassign itself to the center of the geometry. I want it back at the base but how?

Grid Units
How can I make the grid units equal to UED?

At least Max is Z up by default lol.

The tutorials that came with Max aren't really very informative for some reason. At least, I dont' seem to be getting as much from them as I feel I should. It's like they've just been glossed over. And a lot of the time they refer to things w/o linking to other documents to help you if you're clueless when they say click 'such and such' in the rollout. You have to stop for a minute and figure out what a rollout is. It doesn't 'roll' out so it's hard to know w/o a link. Stuff like that.

Anywho, from your experience where can a complete newbie go for a course that is more about learning the interface and workflow as opposed to modelling a head or a car rim?

Navigating: Mouse-wheel zooms; middle-mouse button pans; ALT + middle mouse rotates. ALT+W will minimize/maximize the current viewport. Check Help -> HotKey Map for more shortcuts.

Pivots: Select your object(s), go to the Hierarchy tab towards the top-right of the screen and move the pivot point to where you want it using the options in that menu or the basic transform tools.

Grids: I'm not familiar with UED but you can alter the unit settings by going to Customize -> Units Setup.

I'm fairly new to 3DSM myself and I found video tutorials (of any kind) extremely helpful in learning the program as most of them go through menus to show you exactly what they're doing rather than using the keyboard shortcuts you can't see.

One of the best shortcut keys to use if you're new to Max is F1.
Try it,it will answer all your questions.;)

If you're not comfortable with the way the short cuts are set up, why not define your own ? Works much easier that way - I too don't feel comfortable with all standard ones, simply because they aren't always consistent when switching between software like Max, Photoshop, Painter, Illustrator. :)
