View Full Version : Layers?
rsalonen 02-26-2002, 10:37 PM The newbie is back :D
I'm just wondering what the meaning with layers are for? in what field in the creation you are making do you need layers?
Do they work like Photoshop layers?
Thanks in advance :)

Yes, they work alot like photoshop layers. They are very useful for organizing your scene. They allow you to quickly hide and show objects to optimize real time performance, no need to look at stuff you are not working on right? Render layers also come in handy at render time if you have a large complex scene. Hell even if you dont, rendering in layers will improve your render times.

they work exactly like photoshop layers.
when you have a complex model or scene , you would want to isolate parts of it in different layers for easy access.
for example say you have a metal plate with 200 screws on it. and you have to select the screws frequently. if you dont use layers its rather tedious. if you put them in a layer you just rightclick on the layer name and choose select all, and thats it.
you can also make render layers , but thats a different story.
hope that helps.

Thanks a allot, very usefull information :)
Since I'm familar with Photoshops layers I don't think it will be so hard to understand.
Don't think I need to know all about render layers already, I've got allot to learn about the modeling and materials (which by the way is damn complicated compared to Max material editor) first ;)

it looks like its more complicated , but it really is not once you get used to it.
best of luck

Exactly.....layers are WONDERFUL !!
especially with alot of seperate objects in your scene.
Beats the "show and hide" function ;)
