I am looking for a freeware/cheap shareware program to trim some of my DV footage.

I will be editing this in Vegas eventually, but what I want to be able to do is go through my clips and trim out a lot of the heads and tails that I do not need before I actually edit.

What I am looking for is something that is very light and quick, and allows me to trim a file and re-save WITHOUT recompressing. I have seen some that claim to be able to do this, but they can't read the DV footage.

I have found one piece of shareware that does exactly what I need, (demo works flawlessly for me too) but I thought I'd ask around before shelling out.

Thanks for any suggestions

take a look at www.avid.com . They have Avid Free DV...It's free and fully functional

thanks, but not what I'm looking for. (definately going to check it out more though, so thanks for the link)

I already have an editor (Vegas) that I will be using, and I can trim these clips and export them from there, just like I'm sure you could do with Avid. What I am looking for, is a program that ONLY does the trimming. The reason is because in my experience, a small, purpose built program can get the job done faster and more efficiently than a fully featured one.

Here is the program that I'm thinking of buying, to help better show what I am looking for. It does not edit, has no filters,... blah blah blah. It's pure purpose is to trim video or cut out segments and then re-save without recompressing the data.

If you look at the screenshot it shows selected segments that will be resaved to the new file.

I just wanted to know if there was anything else out there that did this. (don't want to buy the nth best program if there is a better solution available)

In case anyone is wondering WHY I want to do this,... I have clips grabbed from a DV tape, taking up perhaps 7 gig on the drive, but a lot of the clips may have 3 minutes of length, but only 10-15 seconds of anything I would use. By going through all the clips, I can keep only what I need, and probably get the job small enough to burn on a single (data) DVD. I know it's not needed, but I like to work very light and not waste disk space. Also, since the footage is not recompressed, I don't have to worry about quality loss when saving out these selects, and I don't have to shuffle through a long clip just to find the part I'm looking for.

I hope that explained it better.

Thanks

I would use Quicktime Pro for this purpose.

I have absolutely no experience with Vegas, but doesn't it have a Media/Project manager or consolidate function like AVID, Premiere and Final Cut Pro? If it does, that's what I would use.

I must have missed "Vegas" in the first post. Media management (at least until V5) is not very advanced, but you can save your Project using "save as" and the check the option to copy the used media files to the location of the new project file. Then all clips will be trimmed (with handles if you wish). I suggest to save that new project file in the location of the media, then move it to yout project files folder.

Hope this helps.
