I'm trying to model a wheel, the wheel has a rather complicated texture on the tyre which I'd like to model roughly (fine details will be done with textures and bumpmapping). My idea is to make pie section of the wheel and then duplicate it around the X axis, and stitch all the pieces together. Will that work? How do you think I should go about modeling it?

I've attached a picture of the wheel.

Thanks.

Why don't use a displacement map on a simple revolution curve?
I think it's more easy, no?

Got any suggestion on how to make the map seamless and cover all around it without any odd edges etc?

you could model the tire flat, and then bend it aroung the wheel
