View Full Version : way of texture nurbs != polys!?
maYa_GuRu 11-19-2002, 11:52 AM now after years of modelling i undestand the thing of uv text eidt
polys and painting/ mapping them via photoshop or whatever..
but since
nurbs do not have UV unwrap etc.
i wonder
whats the way to map nurbs really detailed ?!
is there a compareable function to unwrap UVs?

What bad happens when you assign a texture map to a NURBS surface?

You could use an 3d-paint package. You could also use the 3d-paint tool and use it to mark certain points on a face -for example-eye, nose, mouth, ear, cheeks, etc and bring that into a paint package. For simple planar projections you could screen capture the model in an ortographic view.
Since I don't own a license for a 3d-paint package I use projections and Photoshop to paint multipatch models. I unwrap the model using the technique described in the book Character Animation for Maya 2:

When everything is painted I convert all the textures into bitmap images. After that I hook everything up to switch nodes.

Hi Rudy,
I checked out your site. Fujitsu is awesome, lol. It's nice to see an artist having fun.

*laffs* thanx... Fijitsu is probably the most simple 3d-image on that page (green only). In my dumpsite I've been working on "miep" in the creatures folder. She's a 300+ multipatch woman... and it has nothing to do with her size ;)

Nice, fantastic model. Any plans for her? I bookmarked the site. I'll keep checking the progress. Patch models always amaze me.

maYa_GuRu,
you might want to look at "Fix Texture Warp" in the "Texture Map" section of the attribute editor for the nurbsShape node. You can assign a checkerboard to a nurbs plane and push and pull cvs to test the effect.
Good luck,

No, I got no plans for her. I still need to convert all the textures connect those textures to their corresponding surfaces in the switch node. After that I probably need to paint/clone some "seam" areas... and than make a wrap model for the rigging part.
I think the question of MAYA GURU is how to get a wire model of an unwrapped model, like poly's have, with NURBS so you can see where you paint.
In that case I recomment the technique in the book I mentioned before. That's also the technique I've used for the Miep model.
