View Full Version : A VFS Demo Reel by Stefan Klippenstein

I would like to share the results of my work at the Vancouver Film School these past several months. Even though I learned so much this past year, I feel like I've barely scratched the surface of this field. I hope I can apply the comments and critiques I receive here to my future projects.

Stephen!! Two words for ya.......Nice....Friggin.....Reel.
I love your set, totally love it! Great touch with the hooks swinging in the breeze, and the grass blowing. Your set was one of my fav's in our class. I really like your low poly guy too, I didnt get to see much of it in class, and it turned out wicked. And of course your Dune-ish guy. For some reason he looks like how I imagined characters looked when the book.
You always had a great eye for detail, and anatomy in class, and Im sure you'll land a great job!:deal:
*insert cliche, sappy sign out here* :)
See ya in the future!

nice stuff!
man, I remember when you were learning 3d!
I really love that set, it's a beautiful piece.
the dune guy is awesome, the anatomy is great, except that the shoulder looks a little too segmented from the chest. I also question why he'd have a hood and not a shirt, but the execution is amazing.
the little guy's neat too, nice simple textures...he's got too many polys in his neck though.

Subtle and sweet to perfection!
Stefan- sitting next to you in term 6 was enlightening. The way you persisted in learning as much as you could untill the very end was inspiring. 2 days before the dead line you were still looking for tutorials on the net. And it totaly paid off. All that knowledge about topology, rigging, Zbrush, FG & GI lighting and your uncompromising devotion to perfect the quality of your work makes your reel stand out with a very unique style.
I was very lucky to be able to learn so much from you in that little corner of ours.
Even though enough has been said (by me) about the percision in which you treated your set and your highpoly model and how clean and beautiful they turned out.. that Henchen-Klein is just so adorable that I must declare it as my favorite of them all.
I wish that we could find a way to work side by side again one of these days. But I'll be sure to hook you up with some high quality Israeli music in the mean time (Even if it will take me a while to get it together).
Good luck man- and we will stay in touch!

Steven,
Your reel is simply magnificent and it was a pleasure to watch. I envy how you created your own path and did what you loved most. It was awesome having someone like you for a year in the same class. I can't to see where you will be guiding yourself next. I would love to see a small, low-poly village in the style of Hanschen Klein... with farmers, chickens and straw-roofed houses. Excellent freestyle-style.
All the best Stefan,
Adam.

Thank you everyone for the encouraging replies. I would also like to hear some more critiques if there are any to be had. Please don't pull any punches for my sake. I really do want to know how my work can be improved. Some areas that I am not totally satisfied with are the skin textures on the torso of my first character; could use more variation and blemishes I think. Not sure about the definition of his abs either.
Confracto - I think you may be right about the shoulder definition. You'll have to pardon the design peculiarities on this one. I learned that flying by the seat of my pants is perhaps not the most efficient way to work on a model with this level of detail. Especially when tackling an obscure/sci-fi theme. Your definately right about my low poly character's neck. No need for all those polies. Good eye.

Well the only crit I would have is to add one more character.

it's already top notch as it is... maybe the lowpoly kids skin weights on his crotch area could use a bit more falloff higher up since it seems like he's made of paper when he folds his legs up during his walk cycle... but that's probably understandable since he's a lowpoly model which btw is still top notch! so yeah... nothing really to crit! skin textures and all! -rj

Your snowboarder dude is hot! He should hook up with my girl 3D Model, ah, just kidding. Nice work man. I agree though, one more realistic model and you'd have a job like that (snap). Anyways, good luck out there. ;)

Everything I have seen from VFS guys on CGtalk forums have been absolutly amazing. All of you are currently punching my creative brain into submission :argh: hahaha Beutiful work man!:applause:
The only thing i could possibly pick on is that the walk cycle of the cool little kid could have some contrapostal in the hips during the walk.
Aslo that the reel is its just too good! ahahaha
Best of luck finding a job!
