This is a character from Tekken 5 that I'm using to teach my self how to paint digitally.

I will color this after I get the B&W shading done.

I'm not using reference.

I'm using Photoshop and Painter

Regular air brush and blending stomp.

I also use photoshop's liquify filter tools to tighten blurry lines and fix distortions when I flip the image to check for errors.

The painting actual size = http://home.comcast.net/~gabe687/feng-wei-wip.jpg

I have a ton of layers, so I can change anything and not have it mess with the other stuff.

Each folder has like 3 - 4 layers with slight highlight, shade, colors and textures like the leg and loin cloth design.

They are all separated in to their own groups.

I made the patterns for the clothing in Illustrator with the pencil tool. I made a flat tile with it and saved it in Photoshop as .tga with an alpha channel.

I put the pattern on a 3D object and set it's self illumination to 100%, then render it with an alpha channel.

I'm trying to become a game developer doing 3D characters, but my texturing and 2D skill are holding me back.

If you would please critique my work as I go, I'd appreciate it.

I made a tutorial to show how I work.

See it here

I find working from Black and white first to be a lot easier for me.

I'm new at this so take that into account when weighing my comments ... I like your work. Your sketch shows a lot of dynamism. The shoes look tiny bit akward to me in the shading but good in the sketch -maybe the shading of the instep? The front leg looks like it has weight on it but the back does not. Again, I am not sure given my noobness but it looks like the back leg needs to be little lighter in value since nce the leg should be about 45 degrees forward of the other? Or perhaps it is the placement of the knee in the back leg?

PS. Excellent tutorial, answers some of my own questions and will review in depth when I get home from work.

Good point, I'll fix that.

I need to align the abs and chest also.

The Right hand still looks wrong :banghead:

I still have to fix the ugly seams and add more details to the shoes.

And whatever else...

Wow! Looking great. Thanks for posting the layer shot as well. Hoping to get a better look at your tutorials soon.

As for the rest I am not sure if the soft/porcelain type look of the skin and arm bands is stylistic? If not and you are shooting for realism I look forward to whatever else you do.

Thanks

The rings are supposed to be gold.

I need to fix them.

I just updated the colored image.

I added more contrast to the torso

Changed the red on the pants

Made his skin less red and a little more yellow.

Added a shadow

A seam on his pant legs

and

Added sweat flying

------------------------------------

I can paint a lot more realistically when I'm looking at photo reference, but I'm doing this guy straight from my head.

I need to work more on my realism...

I updated the image again, I remade the rings on his forearms.

I was having trouble painting them by hand, so I just made them in 3D, then composited them in to the 2D image.

I added colors and texture to them in Photoshop afterward.

(edit)
another update

I got his shoes done

Getting close to finished :wip:

Looks great to me Gabe. There seems to be a tiny bit of 'awkwardness' in the hands -not sure exactly what. It's coming along really well. You are well ahead of my level so not sure I can add much beyond some cheering at this point. :)

OK, I'm going to call it finished at this point.

The hands aren't perfect but that's ok, time to move on to something else.

Next time I'll use reference for the hands.

This is the first full figure I've done like this, I think it turned out pretty good.

Thanks for the crits
