View Full Version : Here we go, max crashes (more than average)

Well, I already brought up about final render volumetrics crashing with max 8 (what already is expected since I'm using it from max 7 version), but here are some 100% sure crashing situations that I get and are VERY anoyning:

1: Final Render finishes a LONG render and crashes max before saving the image, any way of saving my buffer before that? the odd thing is that scenes that aren't so heavy (take less time, didn't find a cutoff value yet), don't crash it at all.
2: Final Render crashes after launching 30 million photons- well, I think I'm asking for it now :D

Of course I'd better talk to cebas about those...

But here are the real bugs:

3: Creating a section object makes the scene crash 100% of the times if an poly-edited object or a shell-applied (both do it) are sectioned.

4: Material editor crashes when opened (instantly), no matter which renderer I'm using, it crashes one out of 3 attempts :banghead:

5: Edit poly crashes when applied to rather simple meshes

6: When reactor finishes doing a simulation

7: Sometimes altering an object's property in the editor makes the scene crash

8: After applying turbosmooth, and no I didn't set any insane ammount of iterations...

9: Sometimes after adding an envroment map

Any idea on what I should do to fix this mess? errors number 4 and 5 accompained me since max 6 ,and error 8 since max 7... :banghead:

sorry to hear about that. i never had many crash problems except for those caused by bad graphic card drivers - is max crashing on you with an error message or does it just vanish from the desktop? if the latter, then you've got a driver problem. also, try switching your viewport driver (ogl vs. directx) to see if it helps any.

aside from that i'd suggest backing up the 3dsmax.ini file and delete it from your max folder so that a fresh one is generated - just in case.

also, i've heard from colleagues that some software should not be run alongside max. do you have any anti virus tools or other system stuff running in the background?

cebas. i'd love to be more constructive but i never heard much good about their apps in terms of software quality.

last possibility - your system is whacky. i too experienced circumstances where my otherwise perfectly well working system showed strange behaviour when max renderjobs or similar intensive stuff was run. turned out to be bad ram-modules in my case. and no, i couldn't believe it at first.

3dsmax crashes with the standard error message and autoloads a send-a-report-to-discreet thing.
I'll try the .ini part, and probably will get a new PC in the future, so the bad system bug can be verifyed.
The odd thing about the super render is that since my buckets were 16x16, it didn't leech up system resources, I could even play music in winamp without any lag :bounce: (I wasn't running anything when it crashed though) :hmm:

I never had any of those problems with fR. Most probably graphic driver related. Be sure to get the latest patch also (but i'm sure you already done that.)

regarding the criticism towards cebas: it's true we often hear bad about cebas, but it is usually because of the company ethics and politics. Software-wise, cebas makes excellent programs that are a bit shunned by the conflits surronding the company. I never heard anybody who was serious and knowledgeable make considerable criticism of cebas stuff.
