You know that I love all your work and what I think of you, so no need to say that I like these too :D

You told me you wanted to diversify your styles. Expend your creative vocabulary so to speak.
What you're doing here is taking your own comfortable and safe style, and try to move from there. That way the work will allways look good and makes you feel safe. But allthough it does look a little different from what I've seen from you, it still has "Tim Lee" written all over it.

What I usually do when I want to try something else, is just the other way around. I take a style I have seen somewhere that excites me and that I really love. But a style I would never think up myself in a milion years. I try to do some experiments with them, and after 1 or 2 tries, it allways moves (far) away from the original style and turns into my own thing.

Best example is the Illustrator things I did (you called it my "flat" work once :D ). I loved what I saw on the web with the pixel phucking stuff. No idea how to do it, so, allthough I knew it was pixel, I took it to illustrator (vector) and it turned out like something completely different. Something very personal to me.
Later I discovered how to do that real pixel stuff, but I stopped it after 4 pieces, cause than I was just doing someone elses thing... wich was fun to get the skills (and if a client wants to pay me to do it, who am I to say no :D ), but not very interesting. It wasn't mine...

I think that's a good way to get inspired by other peoples work, and expand your own horizon. Exploring new styles is difficult (but fun), and a radical approach forces you out of your own safe circle. The "Tim Lee" feeling will come automatically. And there is never any need to drop the other styles

Just my point of view. Hope it will help.
Take care, Jeroen

Ditto what jeroentje said.

These pieces, although a bit different, still say "Tim Lee" to me. If someone else had posted them I would have said the style and technique is remarkably like your work.

A close friend of mine has stated on several occassions that my own work is easily identifiable and that he could pick my stuff out of a large collection of other illustrations. I'm sure he meant that in a good way, but I couldn't help but become a little depressed that I've settled into a style. I've always tried to do different things with my art and explore different styles.

Somehow, I guess I've been stamping each "experimental" piece with my own uniqueness and failing my attempts to develop my work into something more.

It sounds to me like you're experiencing the same problem. But, I'm not saying this to discourage you or make you depressed. Style can be a good thing. You've developed a unique way of expressing your creativity and it is easily identifiable to you. It's like you are at a stage in your art where your illustrations reflect who you are as a person. As much as a big nose on someone identifies who that person is, your illustrations identify who you are.

That's an accomplishment if you ask me. How frequently are the masters of art easily identified by the works that they have done? Can you pick out a DaVinci, Michaelangelo or Piccasso just by looking at the quality of the work?

Continue to explore and try different things, but don't let the fact that it all looks the same to you get you down. It all does look like it comes from you ... but your varied interests and emotions show in each work that you post here.

I'm a big fan of your work and I show it to as many people as I can. Keep doing what you're doing, I haven't heard any complaints yet.

thanks guys,

Where to begin.
I'm glad I am identifiable but frustrated at the same time.

Truth be told I haven't done much major "experimental" work recently until I started working digitally last spring. I was/am always changing slightly because it's death not to IMO.

I pretty much cruised along doing my "style" making a living.
As freelancer there are many things to consider before changing a look and trying to sell it to potential clients. I choose to do the "evolve" method because I don't want to loose whatever name recognition I have with buyers out there. It's all about branding yourself and changing completely, while fun is a major undertaking, (an all new portfolio of images) very expensive to promote nationally. Worst case, it may not sell at all (read...financial ruin). 2. I could use a pen name so as not to ruin any branding built up but that's just as expensive to promote and then I would have twice as much cash to spend on promotional campaigns. So it's the slow evolution method for me.

I could ramble on about this for days but the dog has to go out and my 5yr old is painting downstairswithout supervision (messy)......

You are what you is.

Ah, okay. In that case I just misunderstood you.
I thought you wanted an extra style next to your existing one.
That is a way to work where I live. A small country with a smaller market. When getting a big job, the whole country has seen your work here, so the novelty of a style wears off after a couple of years. Adding new styles to your skills can be a way than. Allthough some think otherwise
