Well I am doing this outdoor environment for my portfolio in Max. After working on characters for so long, I am finding environments very difficult. I'm happy with the plants and Fortress, but I cant seem to get a good render. Any suggestions or crits about anything would be greeeeaat. Thanks.

might want to try a light-tracer, while it cant be run for realtime games, you can bake the faked lighting and it will look like it was lighttraced when ingame.
its far better than realtime stencils obviously.

anyways i love it - keep up the work.
i'd fill the horizon on the top of the hills with trees, kinda far-cry type scene.

Wow, Viper, you are getting so much done. I like the design so far. Not sure what youve got planned for it, but what I would add is a more interesting sky to create a mood (Im assuming you just haven't done that yet), and more variation in the plants. It's a sea of green, and the palms look kickass, but i would like to see some contast; darker greens, some yellows, browns. Maybe hanging vines, remains of some kind, etc. Also temples like this usually have some sort of adorning statue somewhere around it.

As for the render, I'm still working on that myself. I also dont know much about Max. Keep it up, and get that demo out there!

Ok. I spent some time learning the lights and some rendering. I used volume fog and a volume light on the night time one. This is what I've go so far. Any ideas or C&C's please if you got'em.

Good update, night render looks good, however the sky around the moon looks blue, should be black, or at least much darker blue - maybe some stars? Might be a bit bright overall still, then again i suppose its a full moon...

Looking great! I think if you added a few more smaller sized objects you'd get a better sense of scale and the building wouldn't look so plain. Maybe some torches or lanterns for the night scene. The light from these would also add atmosphere.

Well this is it I think. I am going to redo the night time one for sure, but I'm pretty happy with the daytime render....unless you guys see something bad that I don't ;)
