Max radiosity engine can simulate that kind of lighting based on self-illumination I think, or you can use Luma object (part of the Pro Optic Suite).......Hope I helped

If you were using it in conjuction with Brazil, you would give the rectangles a self-illumuniation of 100, give the map slot an output map. Also give the diffuse slot an output map. Adjust the output multipliers to 2-5 or whatever and then render with Brazil and turn on the 'indirect' lighting in the Luma server rollout.
Thats what I do with 3dsmax4 and brazil 1.0. heh... may not be relevant to your problem though.

you have a number of options for this type of lighting. first off, if you are using max 5, there are a host of new lighting tools available to you. under the light creation panel you can now choose photometric light types to use, including linear and area lights either of which could be used for this (linear for a long tube light or area for a larger rectangle light).
you would then have to set the shadow type to area to get the soft shadowing from those lights.
if you are on max 4 or earlier, then you can either choose to fake the lightsource with a number of spots (sort of like what luma objects does) or you can use a 3rd party renderer (brazil, vray, etc). although if you use the public test version of brazil and do the object light method, be advised that render time will be very long, as this method is sort of a hack method and not generally recommended.
if you have a bit more money to spend and decide to purchase another rendering package, you should get another group of tools to use. brazil for example has its own light type you can use and set to area lights, which is a good bit faster then max's area lights.
ian: if you are using the object light method with v 1.0 of brazil perhaps you should take a little closer look at the tutorials on your customer account page, as you could just as easily use area lights and get a much faster render time.
