View Full Version : dropping 10 ton weight onto concrete

I need a little assistance with an animation. I really cannot seem to understand morph targets so I was wondering if someone could point me to a good resource (could be a paid dvd or whatever) illustrating how I would go about dropping a heavy object onto to concrete and have the concrete crater and crack on impact. Will be used for a demo intro...

Thanks for any input or insight.

Hello -

I'd imagine a 10 ton weight wouldn't bounce too much :) It would come down fast and hard, with perhaps a slight little hiccup after it lands.
Without reference, I'd think that the concrete would crack and buckle upward where the weight fell. You can do this with morphs, but also a bit of particle animation for the dust, debri, etc. I've got a few free morph videos that can help you get started - just go to the download page at www.3dgarage.com.

Curious to see how it turns out. Good luck!

for what it's worth, i think they dropped an actual ton-heavy concrete block in the behind the scenes of Return of the King Extended DVD. there's some reference for ya if ya want.

It actually helped me with a few aspects, with animation and actually helped me understand something I had not understood before. But as for cratering and cracking the ground I am still a little lost. But I will keep at it.

what is exactly what are you lost on the cracking?

not so much the modelling I am stuck on, but its the cracking and sinking in. I would imagine that the weight would cause a crater that is not exactly shaped like the weight but similar in shape. Also it would cause the ground to buckle up, plus have the little spider cracks that will imminate from the impact/crater. Those are the parts I am stuck on. I am not going for ultra realistic as the ground will only be a white plane. But I want it to look pretty cool.

for the floor crackin you might whant to have diferent floors,
one that is ok
an
1 with one crack,
2 with the first and second crack

and animate the disolve envelop on each so you cn achive the effect

Someone pm'd me this link http://polas.net/smorph/index.php . ANd this looks interesting. I'll see if there is a demo of this plugin. I am just totally not understanding the whole envelope and morph thing for some reason. I wish there was a training dvd especially for this...:)

Thanks for your help. And the tuts were a big help as well.

You can do this using 8+ and HardFX with the Crackit Plugin.
Check out the Ice Test here - http://www.3dink.com/test.html , pretty simple test but gets the point across...

Using Events, you can easily control the cracking....

Cheers! :D

Nice samples Howard, I was wondering is the plugin you were talking about? http://www.flay.com/GetDetail.cfm?ID=1622 <--Crackit??It says it works up to 7.5. I am currently using 8.3 (scared to use 8.5 for fear some plugins wont work).
