View Full Version : How are cartoons made!
eyeronik 11-10-2005, 07:34 PM Things like The Simpsons, Dextors lab, Sponge bob etc. Are these made in softimage XSI? Its quite hard to find out really so I thought Id see if anyone here has any information about how generally cartoons and animations are made. I know XSI is popular, but I wonder what programs cartoons use

I'm not positive if you're joking or not, but i believe you're confusing 2d animation with 3d animation.
The simpsons, for example, is made by drawing the character in one pose, and then in a slightly different one... and so on, and when you have each frame play after the other, it gives the illusion of motion.
XSI is a 3d tool, used if you want to make films like the Incredibles, or Shrek. I'm not saying XSI was used to make them, but they are 3d.

You can use a cartoon shader to produce cartoony 3d renders, so you probably could use XSI to make a cartoon. I read a book a while back on Photoshop and Maya (can't remember the title) that highlighted some artist who used Maya to animate 3d characters and render them as cartoons. You could use the same process for cartoon animations.

Yes, you could use a 3D tool as a render for 2D like characters.
Look here : http://www.gnouf.com/cache/default.htm
All you see is 3D rendered to look as a 2D with a ToonShader.
Maya was used as a 3D tool and DigitalFusion for layer compositing and color correction.

I also think (both from the impression I get from the series and hearsay) that Futurama uses cell-shaded 3d for it's larger exterior scenes.

Softimage Toonz is an actual program and is used for 2D animation. It's all 2D: first you scan what you have, then you clean up and colour and so on. The program is aimed for bigger productions, such as cartoon series.
