CgTalk:FXWars! CLOSE ENCOUNTERS
COMPOSITE/LIGHTING/ANIMATION WAR
BY Roberto Ortiz

Close Encounters:

From Wikipedia.com

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Close_Encounters (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Close_Encounters)

"

A close encounter of the first kind is a sighting of an unidentified flying object (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unidentified_flying_object) or objects. Reports of "flying saucers," odd lights, or aerial objects unattributable to human technology, can all be considered close encounters of the first kind.
A close encounter of the second kind is an observation of physical evidence of extra-terrestrial visitation. Footprints, heat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat) or radiation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radiation) damage to terrain, and crop circles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crop_circles) found in the vicinity of a UFO sighting could be considered examples of close encounters of the second kind.
A close encounter of the third kind is an observation of one or more occupants associated with one or more crafts.
More recently, some groups have referred to alien abductions (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alien_abduction) as close encounters of the fourth kind, and encounters in which humans and aliens communicate as close encounters of the fifth kind. Still other groups include a sixth type of close encounter, involving the death of a human or animal during a witnessed encounter:

A close encounter of the fourth kind is abduction by an extraterrestrial intelligence. There are two types of CE4 encounters, the first type involving forcible abduction by an extraterrestrial intelligence by an unwilling abductee. The second type of CE4 contact involves willful agreement to be taken.
"
THE CHALLENGE:

Simulate a realistic Alien Encounter. Think of the challenge this way, you have been tasked to do ne new scenes for either the 1977 movie "Close Encounters" OR the TV show "The X-Files".

OR

If you have a cool idea, just drop me a PM.

THIS MEANS...

There are two directions the challenge can take

You have to pick EITHER The "SPIELBERG" or the "X-FILES" Route.

On the Spielberg route, you would be tasked of do on the Movie Close encounters of the Third Kind.

Imagine a kid in a farm playing with a puppy on a yard and suddenly see lights on the sky. (1st kind). Then he runs to the corn Crop and suddenly he realizes there is a pattern. The camera pans up at it shows a CROP CIRCLE (2nd Kind). The key of this kind of entry is a feeling of WONDER.

On the X-Files Route. This means that the encounter has to be terrifying as heck
Imagine later that night, as the kid sleeps, he is visited by GREY aliens who have not seen the Spielberg film.(3rd kind). Suddenly the aliens decide that they have not traumatized enought the kid, so they decide to take him on a field trip to their Flying Saucer (4th kind). The key of this kind of entry is a feeling of FEAR.
The mood and ambiance of the encounter is VERY critical for the challenge. It has to be either the most wonderful experience in the world (like the end of Close Encounters) or the most terrifying event of your life (The kid adbuction in Close Encounters, or any alien episode of the X-Files.)

Since the topic is so broad, we have limited the scope to FOUR mayor categories based on the alien encounter scale:

CLOSE ENCOUNTER OF THE 1st KIND (Difficulty Level MODERATE)
Watching an UFO from the ground
CLOSE ENCOUNTER OF THE 2nd KIND (Difficulty Level MODERATE)There is fisical evidence of them , for example crop circles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crop_circles) or burned marks on the ground.
CLOSE ENCOUNTER OF THE 3rd KIND (Difficulty Level HIGH)There is an Alien Encounter, with the occupants of the crafts.
CLOSE ENCOUNTER OF THE 4th KIND (Difficulty Level HIGH)
It is either an alien abduction or the a person voluntarily entering into a flying saucer
CLOSE ENCOUNTER HYBRID ENTRY: (Difficulty Level VERY HIGH)
It combines encounter types.
One of the key of the challenge, for all entry types, is to do believable shots, and that there needs to be some live action footage to at least one sequence (but the live action can be a photograph). Multiple techniques should be used to produce the shots (3D models, miniatures, matte paintings, live action, photographs etc) so good integration of composite elements is key. This is an excellent opportunity for compositors to try their skills.
Because of the high level of dificulty of this challenge, it is STRONGLY encouraged that this challenge be done in teams.

At the end of the challenge a finished entry that looks EXACTLY like either a FX scene we might see on a movie like "Close Encounters" (Spielberg Route) OR the TV show "The X-Files" (X- Files Route). Since the contest of high difficulty you will have A MONTH and a HALF to do the challenge.

The best animation/short will be selected by an open vote
for these categories:

Best Composite Work
Best Animation
Best Editing
Best Visual Effects
Best Cinematography
Best Overall Entry
The winner will get bragging rights and a small banner
designed by me.

Very interesting challenges lately Roberto! Been watching these become more collab/team oriented work... KUDOS for helping intiate that whether intentional or not. :buttrock:

Also have to say the ideas you are coming up with are so good...admittedly,the 'I'm too busy to join' whine is cliche, but you do tempt me so! :D :)

Man, I really wish I had the time to work on this challenge, but unfortunately finishing my portfolio is of higher priority. I hope that this challenge and the Grand Space Opera Challenge come back again in the future when I actually have the time to work on them.

Anyway, if you guys want some instrumental inspiration I would suggest listening to some of Alan Silvestri's music such as "Good to Go" from Contact or my favorite of his, "Bud On the Ledge" from the Abyss. That song still gives me goosebumps just listening to it. I would say that it has one of the best builds and climaxes of all-time. I don't think it would be very applicable for an X-files type encounter, but would certainly be motivational for an encounter of wonderment and awe.

Good luck to everyone.

I appreciate the effort but im starting to feel like these challenges are a bit overthought. Why cant you just say "aliens" and let us run with it? All the rules sort of ruin it for me.

These are FX wars, not grand space operas or spectacular challenges

RobertoOrtiz
11-10-2005, 08:07 PM
Apoc519 I see your points..
and in the future I WILL do a challenge with no rules..

I am curious, what kind of entry you had in mind?

Well to be honest, you can do them as simple or as complicated as you wish them.

Simple entries could be:

A simple flying saucer on over a field or a skyline.
A Crane up shot of a crop circle
A 1950's alien blowing up a building
A shot similar to the Sasquatch film from 1967 of sasquatch film.
But instead use an alien.

Cool Topic, how inspiring!

I hope I'll have enough time to work on this one... I could really use this to improve my VFX skills...

BTW I have actualy been in a CE1 once in my life, still think it was a real flying saucer and not a kite with flashlights as was later published in the local newspapers... I always thought there was some sort of a cover-up going over there. I might re-create it in the actual location! there are some cool stories I've heard and might inspire me... :)

Tyson! I want to see you work on this one as well, can't wait to see what you'll post...

Good luck to us all! :)

Think I'm in on this one again, although I may call in some friends for a team this time as there's going to be a fair amount of shooting and maybe greenscreen involved.

I'll get a WIP thread up once decided.

The scope of the challenge is limited to close encounters of the 1st,2nd,3rd, and 4th kind. What about the 5th and 6th kind?

A close encounter of the fifth kind involves direct communication between an extraterrestrial intelligence and a human being.

A close encounter of the sixth kind involves the death of a human being or other animal during a witnessed encounter. Witnesses reporting UFOs flying above fields where cattle has been mutilated would be classified as a sixth-kind encounter.
I think if fear is something we are trying to achieve, broadening the scope to include CE 5/6 might be a good idea. Or at least be able include these elements into a hybrid entry?

Just call it a hybrid entry and we can call it a day.

Roberto can ido a space ship crashing ? in earth ?

RobertoOrtiz
11-13-2005, 04:28 PM
That would be a Close encounter of the first kind...

The spaceship of course has to be an UFO.

And it would be cool if you show people running away from it.

Looking forward to your entry.

Yes, but you may change the type as you work on it.

For example a THIRD KIND thread might become a 1st KIND thread.

Dagibit
11-15-2005, 11:29 AM
One of the key of the challenge, for all entry types, is to do believable shots, and that there needs to be some live action footage

Yes, I belive so. If your confident in your realism, you may not need it, though it wouid be a big help.

You may have intereaction if you wish to, but it all depends on the type of encounter.

For example on a close encounter of the first kind, you might only have a flying saucer on top of a building.

-R

fabmedia
11-15-2005, 04:24 PM
I can think of a couple of scenarios (sp?) that wouldn't need any live action shot to make it believable. What it would really come down to is the quality of the storyboard, action, and render. Now that being said, I'm not even sure if I could pull it off, but I'm sure going to try (maybe).

I think he meant the image aspect ratio that means if u r using 3ds max then max's default image ratio 1.333 for 640x480 or 320x240 res. should be ok...4x3 meant to be 4 width and 3 height for image.and its aspect ratio is 1.333.:)
