Doesn anyone know if this is supported? I have gotten the same exact results from all the training videos they posted online, which is a plus, but My SubDs aren't rendering. Its not mentioned that they aren't supported. Anyone able to Clarify?
Thanks,

quoted from the documentation

"mental ray for Maya does not support the following Maya rendering features:

all postprocessing effects: Paint Effects, shader/light glow, optical effects, 2d motion blur, and fur rendering.
software rendering of particle systems
direct rendering of Maya subdivision surfaces
Interactive Photorealistic Rendering (IPR)
Field Rendering
Pre/Post Render MEL scripts
Fluid Effects"

convert them to poly to render

You can use Smooth Proxy and get your sub-d's to work in MR.

well... no, they aren't sub-d's if you're using smooth proxy. it may look similar but smoothed proxies are less efficient, and are less smooth than sub-d.

I know that Smooth Proxy is not a "real" sub-d, but it will give you the same effect AND it will work with MR! :)

smoothed proxies are less efficient, and are less smooth than sub-d.

Not sure if I believe that? I know a few big fx-companies that wrote there own sub-d emulator in Maya and it's based on Maya's Smooth algorithm which is what Smooth Proxy is.

Well , smooth proxy doesnt give you the fine control Sub-d gives you:

creasing controls and ability to go finer\coarser when modelling the mesh.

Maya sub-d's are very slow though , its best to go with smooth proxy until its %90 complete , than convert to sub-d and do the creasing if necessary and than convert back to poly to render with MR.

Hey, there's nothing wrong doing like that Sheep Factory :)
I never use the creasing controls, I just add a extra poly or two to get a crease and I don't use the finer\coarse on area's either.
I put my poly's where I want/need them.
I usually model in poly mode 95% of the time and would just sub-d it to check it out.
Anyway is is getting off the subject...... I mean I am getting off the subject. :)

create 2 layers... add your subd model to one layer, then convert the subd model to polys maintaning history. Add your new poly object to the second layer.

at render time turn the layer of containing the subd model and turn the layer on containing the poly mesh....MR will render the poly mesh

this is one method i have used..works better for animation that single renders as it is a pain to turn layers on/off every time you want to do a test render :p
