View Full Version : Geforce 4 and 3DSMAX 5 very slow
my new msi geforce 4600 runs extremely slow with max in direct3d mode and even slower in opengl. it is slower than the geforce 2 i had before. other applications and games are very fast. i installed the latest 40.72 detonator and the 4in1 via drivers but that doesn't help.

is it just in wire mode? try installing the real drivers, not the beta ones. :D
you're right the wireframe mode is supermega slow. i tried the original msi drivers, detonator 30.00 and 40.00. i think these are the real drivers?

hmm, weird. Try contacting your discreet resaler. :annoyed: That would piss me off if it was so slow! Could be something else though, could u list your system specs please. (and what I meant about the real drivers is that the 40 is beta) well last time I checked

have you tried setting both windows desktop color and OGL bitdepth to 16-bit ??
this might help, cuase when i run in 32-bit, it's SLOW, but when i turn em down to 16 it a helluva lot faster [still not fast enough tho, but that's 3dsmax for ya ;)]

Psychodad I think you are experiencing the same thing I was until visualboo posted the solution for me. I would definately give it a try. It worked for me and several others here with exactly what you are describing. It all comes down to applying an edit mesh modifier to your model at the top of the modifier stack. Now I know this sounds crazy, but it DOES work.
What you do is create your model and convert to poly or whatever then apply your meshsmooth modifier (again whatever) next then lastly apply an edit mesh modifier. Make sure the edit mesh modifier is ALWAYS at the top of the stack and always applied. Then right click the edit mesh modifier in the stack and click "OFF IN RENDERER" so the edit mesh modifier will not effect your render. Make sure the show end result button is turned on too at whatever level modifier you are working on before edit mesh so the edit mesh modifier will be in effect all the time.
Now watch your wireframe model spin around your viewport with ease. Really worked for me. Plus you can keep your Windows video bit depth at 32 and use D3D or OpenGL, whatever you choose is okay with this solution.

I've been scratching my head over this one for a couple days now and just can't think of why your's is slow. I have a Gainward GF4 4600 and max5 but mine is pretty darn fast (nothing compared to xsi but that's another issue). I also keep hearing people say that Gf4's are slow in wireframe but mine seems fine. hmmmmm.
What pokechop said is true although I should have used a meshselect in that vid, but they both work pretty similar.
What equinoxx said miiiight work but I really don't get that big of a performance boost when going down to 16bit (I run at 1600x1200). I did however get some silly "errors" though. Like the poly cut feature in Clay (http://www.rocket3d.com) was acting up and not snapping to the edges and points. It works perfectly in 32bit. And basically just a bunch of other small things in other apps. NOT worth it imo.
Me and Ambient were trouble shooting that a little while ago and he remembered that it was the fact that I was in 16bit because mirai acts all funky when he's in 16.
I really don't know what else to say. I'm running 40.41 drivers and everything works great. You might want to call discreet and hassle them.

Do those detonators come with NView (it shows up in the menu when you right-click the desktop)? If so try disabling it, made a huge difference to my 'puter.
dual planes is a video card feature that needs to be disabled for geforces in order to improve performance and stability.
also use triangle strips should be checked to boost wireframe speed a bit
u might also check to see what version of opengl max is using
It should be using version 1.4.0. If it is not using that version then you must not be uninstalling your old drivers completely before you install your new ones.
also what motherboard do you have? And what video related bios settings are you running? You can throttle a geforce card with inappropriate bios settings and a geforce can prove to be ultimately incompatible to certain motherboards
sam
thank you for all the hints. opengl works a bit faster now. the activated triangle strips run fine (although i find them irritating during modeling).
i found the softquadro for geforce4 now and will try this on max...
http://nvworld.ru/docs/sq4e.html
i installed the softquadro and maxtreme drivers for 3dsmax5 and it runs more than two times faster now. :applause: :applause:
but the maxtreme drivers are for max4 and the transform gizmos are not displayed correctly. does anybody heard about new maxtremes for max5?

Mabye a little solution for the transform gizmo, just desactivate the labeling (preferences -> gizmo -> show axis labels unchecked) and after that it works pretty well :) Ab

That's so weird. Are you running max 5 beta perhaps ? It did have a bug that made geforce 4 go all sluggish, but no trace of that in the retail.
I'm running the same beta drivers and my system actually improved on all previous ones (But only with these drivers, the earlier beta drivers had many bugs).
Also, there's a tool somewhere on a detonator site, that can remove all files of previous installed drivers. It's usefull to do that and go back to the standard adapter, have it remove all rubbish, reboot and install the newest drivers.
Hope that helps a bit - good luck! It should be able to run very fast.

I've got that problem to but in my case it was the cdilla software, it was the wrong version and it makes problems with the winlogon. You can see this when you look in your taskmanager. If the winlogon is at 50% or more CPU% then something is wrong. It should run at 0% all the time.
If you don't understand what I write it is my bad english.
that's strange. with 3dsmax i've no problems with winlogon but since i've installed norton antivirus 2003 (just about 3-4 days) winlogon eats up to 80 cpu%. i had nav 2002 all the time and it worked fine :hmm:

I've got a problem with nav2003 too. Everytime I get a Bluescreen nav doesn't start again. Then I have to reinstall it, deinstall it and install it again, thats shit.

About Norton: are you using XP cause it sounds like an XP issue.
Make sure your vertical sync is turned off. Try Greg's optimisation guide (http://www.3dluvr.com/content/article/104/1) .
Maxtreme doesn't work for max 5. Period. If you want to see the gizmo (who needs it anyway :)) try maxtreme 4.00.13 from (it's a miracle lord) Elsa's site:
ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/misc/elsa/FILES/GRAPHICS/ELSAWARE/
Won't make max any faster.
By the way if anyone feels like benchmarking max 5 try
SpecAPC (http://www.specbench.org/gpc/apc.static/max42info.html) with Geforce, Quadro, Softquadro, Maxtreme or whatever you can think of. Good luck.

I have a geforce2 GTS moded to a quadro2pro and i run maxtreme just fine under 3dsmax 5 :/
it's only the transform gizmoz which aren't displayed correctly with maxtreme. which version of the maxtreme drivers do you use?
