Hi! This is my first attempt at a serious 3D animation. I've tinkered here and there, but I'm on a mission to actually create a finished product this time. I'm a Flash designer by trade, so animation is no stranger to me. I also create short films so my sense of editing and comedic timing is strong.

I'm using Lightwave, it has the most of what I want and I find it to be the easiest as far as intuitive user interfaces. I find that the best programs are the ones where I can do basic tasks quickly, model quickly, aniamte quickly, and then go back and fine tune everything. I use the computer like an instrument, one hand on the keyboard, one on the mouse/tablet.

So I'll describe the story later when I get some aniamtion samples up, but for right now, there is a magician, a young punk in the audience, a beautiful assistant, a rabbit, and a chicken. THat's all the actors and I'll be posting them here for critiquing.

My objective is to get it done and fast, so I probably won't be going back to revise any models until the end, if there's time.

Speed is critical, and only do what's necessary...

The magician I need details in the hands, since I will need a CU of his hands.
Also, since he's the main focus of the piece, I sent the most time on him. His hair is sticking straight up because I haven't rigged him yet, but basically he has a comb-over.

Speaking of rigging, I will be trying a different, perhaps unique, method to rig these characters, one that doesn't use weight-maps since I cannot stand the amount of time weight maps consume. I'll describe my method later.

His cape I may/may not make it a cloth sim, or just use bones. Need to test that, time permitting, but whatever looks convincing and is the fastest will be the route I take.

Here's the heckler in the audience. I don't think we'll see his shoes too much so I didn't spend time on them. I created a large mouth since he will be doing some laughing and sneering.

Short cartoon-looking hair is great, so I don't have to do any hair sim.

Still need to fix that thumb...

More as I get to it. :)

Here are the two sets I'll be using. These are the wide shots. I have other cameras for close-ups.

The Magician's stage. The colors are washed out to keep the atmosphere seeming old and pathetic.

The audience seating. Our heckler will be sitting where the light is.

Now, I'm new to this whole 3D animation, but does anyone know if it's wiser to render the background out first, then render the characters in a separate pass and just composite the two together? Or will this cause other unseen problems?

I'll be posting more as I get to it.

Here's the magician's assistant. THere's two more characters, a chicken and a rabbit. Haven't gotten there yet, thought I'd do some rough animation first.

And here's a quick still from the animation.

I'm thinking I'll move my solitary thread over to 'Animation', since that is where my main focus is. I'll post my rigs and techniques there as well.
