Reactor shoud do the trick.
In your MAX tutorial reference there is an tutorial about reactors "fracture". It's not ideal, but it will do the trick
I've seen you around in the PFlow topic, so you've propably heard about Allan McKay's "Advanced Visual Effects DVD". He covers some of the reactor pieces you need :)
Good luck!

Yeps, the Advanced Visual Effects DVD. He does a shatter tutorial with a brick wall, but that could easily be conferted to a window!
