Hi everyone... i am working on a design in flash and i have come to a problem getting my desired effect. basically i am wanting to create a glowing star type effect but a bit more complex...

i was wanting to create a radial gradient and then have points around it that extend and pull the gradient to that pint randomly... bit hard to explain... the best way i think i can explain this is if you look at http://www.2advanced.com/ enter the site to the home page and then in the top left there is a small bar that has a glowing effect where by the random points go high and low... i want to create the same effect but in a radial version...

any ideas????

actionscript their are some tutorials here http://www.actionscript.org/ if i find out how i will tell you

you have to program the sound in flash with the highs and low of the sound

cheers... but i wasnt actually going to worry about the sound part... im just going for the visual effect... so the peaking of the orb would just be random... im just not sure how to set it up like that... i have worked with flash quite a bit but never really gone into alot of depth with it and its features...

Look closely at the 2advanced effect: its not random. Its a looping animation, probably just some blurred bitmaps.
As for Your question - I think there are two (ok, three) solutions: first one - just like the guys from 2advanced did: make some bitmaps with different shapes, and morph them in Flash (with opacity tween).
Second - make some vector shapes in Flash, shape-tween them, and stack them with different opacity, rotation and size in one place.
HINT: there are different blending modes in Flash 8, just like in Photoshop, some are just perfect for creating 'glow' effect...
Third: You can program these shapes in ActionScript, Flash can draw filled Bezier curves... and Then You can animate the points and control handles with some math-oriented script...

(sorry for any mistakes, English is not my native language :))

I wouldn't leave out a fourth solution (and I actually think that's how 2advanced might have done it): After Effects (and probably Trapcode's Shine plugin)

But I'm not sure, I'm just saying that's another way of doing it.

It is a series of 40 images that loop, you could do it in ps but it would be much easier in ae
