i seem to be having some trouble making a paper looking cup, like the type you would get at starbucks.

Ive reduced the specular and gloss levels to 0 and ive added some noise maps to to the specular color, specular level and bump parameters

anybody have any suggestions?

I was gonna say don't forget paper is not totally opaque, but that probably doesn't apply to a thicker thing like a paper cup. I can't think of much to help you. Perhaps try finding a parchment or fibrous texture and very subtly applying it. Other than that, maybe your just over analysing it? I mean is it that important to your image?

Thanks for responding.

Yeah its a thick cup so it wouldn't be to translucent

The image I am rendering is for a poster, and since it will be the focus of the poster and representing the real product I wanted to get as authentic a look as possible.

I also thought it would be a good exercise on making a paper type material for future reference.

Do you mean Styrofoam cups? I can't say i've seen a 'paper' cup so to speak.

Could you post an image, then perhaps we can have a closer look.

Here is a photo of a paper cup taken with a digital cam.
Not the greatest shot but its the only photo reference I have.

Hmmm.... the bump map would be rather important in this case :)
Try and recreate that papery grain as closely as possible.

For a paper cup, you would have a very low specularity, and virtually no gloss, unless the cup was slightly wet. So you were right in reducing those to 0.

Why not post a render of what you have so far? It's a bit tricky to help steer you in the right direction when we can't see what you've actually done so far :)
